Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 07, 2011 1:24 pm I've come to my crunch time - I am going ahead with demolishing and rebuilding and now need to decide what to do with my heritage roses. these guys have lived, grown and flowered for me with stuff all water, fertiliser and attention, and of course, now that I am going to pull the house down, are currently flowering their little hearts out. Do I just see what survives the process, plant into pots (very large pots), or say, so sad, I will start again when the house is finished? For those that are interested, I have General Galleni, Mutablis, Mde Isac de Perrier, Souvenir de la Malmaison (climing, and massive flowers for the first time ever), Lamarque (climing) and Irene Watts (chinese bush). Little White Pet and Antique silk are small enough that I won't have problems potting them up (I hope). I'm sad to see the ornemental peaches go, but quite happy with losing the Queensland Box trees. So not a suburban tree! What would you do? Re: demo and rebuild - what to keep from the garden 2Aug 07, 2011 10:41 pm The Orn Peaches might be saved. Tree mobs may wish to come and rescue it but would need to be on a free, you remove basis. At least it would go to a good home Roses are by no means a soft fluffy plant. They are one of the toughest and least trouble plants to have in a garden. It is emotional gardeners who put such deep sentiment and love into them that we now see unbelievable amounts of merchandise, sprays, and assorted un necessary rubbish specifically for them These fellas, just cut them back hard, even the climbers. Sharpen the spade to a knife like edge, get a small tomahawk, nice and sharp and get digging. Buy some good size cheap plastic containers, drill hole s in them for drainage. There's the temp pots. Maybe some cheap plastic bins will do? Get some Debco certified Organic Potting mix ready for in the pots. No special fertilisers or the like. Have seasol on hand though. Dig em all out. If you can soak them in a seasol solution before planting them up in the pots then that will be of great benefit. No biggie if one or two don't make it but I think they all will Re: demo and rebuild - what to keep from the garden 3Aug 07, 2011 10:59 pm Hi ChristineX I've done the same exercise - have around 30 roses I dug out and re-potted - Seasol is a must. I had to dig them out end of summer - not the best time. Prune them slightly and keep them a bit sheltered during summer - the pots get hot and the soil dries quickly. BTW got my pots from freecycle which saved me a heap of money and helped the landfill but for your larger roses you might need to get some plastic bins. Unfortunatelly I lost my Pierre the Ronsard climbing rose. It was too big to be re-potted. The most prolific flowering climber...
