Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 14, 2011 1:33 pm Hi all, Looking for some retaining wall advice and also some business names to get some quotes (Sydney Northern suburbs - Hornsby). The wall is approx 7m long and tapers from 1.2m high at one end down to ground level at the other. The wall will be approx 800mm out from the house slab. The ground is all rock. Obviously I will have to drain behind the wall and also the cavity created between the wall and the house. Im thinking that a besser block wall will be the best option but Im open to opinions. Any advice in relation to this wall would be much appreciated. Some pics are here. They are not great photos but hopefully you get the idea. Going to try to get some quotes so if you know anyone in the area then let me know. If it is then get a hold of the specs as submitted and approved on the DA and go from there. If not, then you will need to submit engineered plans due to the height. Re: Retaining wall advice needed 3Jul 22, 2011 2:16 pm Why Besser block? Is that the look that you prefer? An option that seem to be rising in popularity is re enforced concrete sleepers with gal steel posts. You can then render the sleepers. Also you could use treated pine as a cheaper option with gal steel and use cement sheeting on the front of the posts and render those. As mentioned, you'll need an engineers design for that height and a permit for the wall. You won't get to decide where it goes (ie 800mm off or more) as the engineer will look at the foundations of the house and what they need. Re: Retaining wall advice needed 4Aug 08, 2011 1:51 pm Thanks for the advice. The DA just said that retaining walls were as required. There was no design or detail provided. I have spoken to my private certifier and he says that there is nothing on the DA approval that requires the wall to be engineered. This seemed strange to me. This is the solution I will end up going with. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It is a gravity wall solution from adbri masonary called the AB Aussie vertical. This wall allows me to have minimal footing which was my main aim as it is all rock and I wanted to avoid excavation (no access plus expensive). I had a mate who is a structural engineer look at it and he thinks it is good. For up to 1200mm the infill depth is around 300mm. Infill is no fines concrete. I hope to get the levelling pad poured with the driveway and do the blockwork, drainage and no fines backfilling myself. Anyway that is my plan at this stage. Will see know how it goes.
