Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 26, 2011 12:59 pm Our backyard is quite steep, 1:3 and even up to 1:2 in small parts of the garden. At the moment our gardens are mulched with a mixture of tree loppers mulch and pine chips. It is due for another mulching, so I'm wondering if there is a recommended mulch to use on sloping gardens? Re: Best mulch for erosion control 2Jun 26, 2011 1:48 pm I would think one with different sized pieces of fine and chucky would mesh together the best. Eg. loppers/arborist mulch. If its has worked for you, stick with it. Re: Best mulch for erosion control 4Jun 27, 2011 4:28 pm We had a similar problem when a bushfire razed our yard and removed all vines and covering vegetation - our slope was similar to yours and we contacted an enviro group to discuss options - the best cheapest result they suggested was a heshian type mesh that is rolled out over the bank and interplanted with native creepers and groundcovers. The mesh stabilises the bank while the plants take over and gradually breaks down over 5 or so years. I went to see an area of landscaping they did and it was pretty unobtrusive - in the end it would have cost approx $1500 for a 30 x10 metre area. We didnt go ahead as we decided to just sell up instead. To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless.
