We got some Pekins, some ISAs, some ISA - Leghorn crosses, a Rhode Island Red, one Sussex and a stray black bantam. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Chooks 25Jul 02, 2011 8:26 pm As long as they have got approximately 1 sq m of ground each in their normal enclosure you are doing fine Kyton! Chooks 27Jul 02, 2011 9:13 pm Dee - the run is around 4m by 6m whilst the coop (chicken section) is 4m x 2.5m. Ok apparently the black unknown is an Old English Game bantam. We went and checked on them - they are all snuggled on one row of the roost except for two who are cuddling in the rice hull husks on the floor. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Chooks 36Jul 08, 2011 11:10 am Kyton, that photo is just adorable!! Chooks are definitely a good thing for kids Are Pekins a large size breed, or do they come in bantam as well? They don't look particularly big girls the kids are holding? Cassie 28/7/11 - Slabbed 15/8/11 - Framed 19/9/11 - LOCKED UP! 6/10/11 - Kitchen in! 11/11/11 - It's all OURS! They are around 14-18wks old at the moment. Super calm and able to be held. That black one will happily be nursed for 20mins LOL. The scrub is almost decimated after not even a week - great for weeding!! Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Chooks 40Jul 11, 2011 11:56 pm We've got two chooks (Isa Browns) and have a couple of suggestions regarding their living quarters. We keep the chooks up the back and side of the shed. They are enclosed by chook wire about 5 ft high. The top was open to egg stealing crows. Tip 1) - Get yourself some cheap bird netting from the big green shed (the one with the picture of a hammer on it), and enclose the top also. It'll save you from losing eggs to...those thieving birds Tip 2) - If you are going to let them out in the yard....keep an eye on them as they can make a mess of your manicured vege patch. Also, wear thongs or other footwear to protect your toes from fresh droppings. Tip 3) - If you, like me, keep chooks next to a shed...you may well encounter rats in your shed. If this is the case, and you feel the need to bait them, like I did, then DON'T use pellets. Pellets that fall out of the side wall of the shed and into the chook yard can look to a chook like green pellets. We lost one of our girls like that It was awful. Chooks are freakin awesome though. Kids love em, they make great fertiliser to add to the compost (in small amounts...natives apparently don't like the nitrogen available in chook poo), and they recycle all your kitchen scraps. Oh... and with regards to kitchen scraps, a good rule of thumb is to not give them anymore than they can eat in 10 mins. Otherwise it just gets left for other things to pick at when the chooks go to bed. Enjoy your feathered friends. |
