It was only because we lost one that we introduced another pair, and now have 3. I think introducing them as chicks was important though, so she wasn't threatened by them. Re: Chooks 103Jul 25, 2012 6:58 pm Hi just seen this thread and have to add my 2 cents worth! Here is a pic of our chook house, the run is to the left of house.. I bought it from the internet, it has a big sliding tray to take out and clean from underneath the roosts which is great. We use pea straw in the nesting boxes. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We are in suburbia so went for bantams: 12 hens allowed max. ATM have araucana/polish crosses and the rest 3 wyandottes- 2 gold, 1 silver. The araucana/polish are a very quiet and sociable cross, anyone can pat them. I like the ones with the "beatle" haircuts Wyandottes are rather skittery in contrast, not at all people chooks, but sooo pretty. Bantams are great layers, we get up to 3 dozen a week when they are all laying and my Darling sells them for $1 a dozen at work just to keep in crumbles. They also get our kitchen scraps. They LOVE bacon and go crazy for parrot seed... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Chooks 104Jul 25, 2012 7:20 pm Chooks love warm porridge too....and lamb shank bones. They just love any meat even chicken (yes, sad to say...I give them the carcases so they are cannibals....!!!!)) Re: Chooks 106Jul 25, 2012 7:25 pm Chooks are descended from jungle fowl-so they will eat meat. Our girls were running around with chicken skin streaming from their beaks today-well, the ones who were quick enough to grab it were....as they were chased by the less lucky ladies! We have heaps of earthworms and they turn up their noses at them. They also LURRRRRRRVE cockroaches, I'm glad we don't keep chooks for meat!!! Thanks Dee, thumbs ok, i think i bruised my ego more than my thumb......my kids thought it was pretty funny watching me roll around on the ground in the fetal position screaming like a little baby, they stopped laughing when they saw the blood coming from my thumb .
