Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 08, 2011 5:01 pm I am getting a brickie to build a retaining wall for me. It will be about 500mm high, and is purely decorative. It will also be up against a colorbond fence. Now, I need a 'backing' so that the weight is not up against the colourbond fence. Someone suggested blueboard to me. What exactly is it, will it do the job, and how much does it generally cost? Are there any other cheap solutions? I could obviously get the brickie to do the back as well, but will double my cost which is not something i'm willing to do. Re: Retaining Wall questions 2Jun 09, 2011 8:03 am Blueboard is a type of cladding board it can not be used to retain anything. If you are looking to have the retaining wall behind a nice feature brickwall your cheapest option would be to use timber or keystones. There are a heap of threads on this site re-retaining walls will can give you an idea of what timber to use (i.e 200 x 100mm H4 treated pine) or where to get cheap factory second keystones. The other option is to talk to your bricky about getting an extra skin (use cheap common bricks in the extra course as no -one will see them) and bigger footing in your brick wall and get that to be your retaining wall. What ever you decide remember to have good drainage behind the wall or it will all have to be done again in a few years. It will be about 500mm high, and is purely decorative So its not a retaining wall, just a wall? deeps It will also be up against a colorbond fence. Not sure why it needs to lean up against a fence. If its a retaining wall it shouldn't be leaning to ward anything other than the material its retaining. Can you post a drawing or picture of what you want. From the way I read the OP it doesn't make any sense. Re: Retaining Wall questions 5Jun 09, 2011 6:31 pm Sorry, I'll try explain Our land is perfectly level, but more than a retaining wall, it's more so a garden bed up against the back colorbond fence. The garden bed will be made of bricks, but the side that sits against the fence will be left. Now, obviously if we have the weight of the soil up against the colorbond, this will cause a problem, and so we need to put something there to make sure little to no weight goes up against the fence. I was asking if blue board was capable of doing this. As I mentioned, it's a low garden bed/retaining wall - only about 500mm high, so we're not talking huge amounts of sand etc. Re: Retaining Wall questions 7Jun 10, 2011 12:27 am He can, it will cost a whole lot more(basically twice as much, hence i'm looking for alternatives... I've been told people have used things like blue board before Re: Retaining Wall questions 8Jun 10, 2011 7:26 am Basically you need to build a planter box, all 4 sides. Colorbond fences are not designed to retain soil, having the bricklayer do all sides will be cheaper than you replacing the fence when it fails. If you want to do it your self you could use sleepers or logs along the fence line. Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Not sure what council area you are in. Some LGA's allow zero lot retaining walls. This usually occurs in greenfield developments but not often in established areas. You… 1 8229 4 11198 Thank you again Simeon..
