Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 03, 2011 11:36 am Went to the Children's Garden in the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens last week and if anyone lives in the vicinity with small children, or like us a train ride away, then I'd wholly recommend it. They have Brachychiton rupestris (Queensland Bottle Tree) which are looking pretty good, and a wonderful bamboo forest featuring A. cunninghamiana in the centre, surrounded by Bambusa lako (Timor Black Bamboo), Babusa vulgaris, Dendrocalamus latiflorus 'mei-nung' and Phyllostachys heterocycla f. pubescens. It was pretty cool and my daughter loved it Anyway, they were all growing very well in Melbourne, although I didn't manage to find any fully grown P. heterocycla in the Children's Garden, I'm sure there are some elsewhere in the RBG. I presume that they must have built some sort of containment around it because it can send roots out 20m and they are invasive, but I didn't spot any of it popping it elsewhere. You would know if you did because the shoots are huge. Can you imagine growing a temperate bamboo, that gets up to around 70 foot in height, 8 inches in circumference, and can grow up to 3 foot a day?! AND it can be invasive...?? Well, I can't, but I'm pretty willing to give it a go, if only I can make sure it doesn't 'pop' up in the neighbours gardens We are building a second dwelling and are currently selecting window and door frames.
