As for heights, well it depends totally on what was done with the soil before the whole lot went together. The plants will only grow as well as the soil is healthy. Re: Who knows what these plants are? 5May 20, 2011 11:21 pm Thanks Fu for the reply - I have been told that there is 100mm of topsoil under all this and that the plants should thrive although only time will tell. In terms of identifying - what photos should I take that would make it easy to identify. ONe of the trees I noticed has some kind of a berry -however i'm totally clueless when it comes to common plant species. Is the tall one Lilly Pilly? No I don't think it is Protea as this plant has a small berry like fruit (almost like a bery dark blue berry). I am in Sydney and next time I'm there I'll take some shots of the leaves and berry's Project History Deposit - 20/4/2010 Land Settled - 20/8/2010 Council - 30/9/2010 Slab - 17/11/2010 Bricks - 28/01/2011 Roof - 5/02/2011 Gyprock - 4/03/2011 Re: Who knows what these plants are? 9May 22, 2011 6:54 am Trish Is the tall one Lilly Pilly? Thanks Trish - i think we are on the right track although I googled Lilly Pilly fruit and the ones on the tree that we have are almost black but look like the fruit from a lilly pillu Cheers Project History Deposit - 20/4/2010 Land Settled - 20/8/2010 Council - 30/9/2010 Slab - 17/11/2010 Bricks - 28/01/2011 Roof - 5/02/2011 Gyprock - 4/03/2011 Re: Who knows what these plants are? 10May 22, 2011 12:02 pm The first tree looks like Elaeocarpus reticulatus (Blueberry Ash). The next is Tristaniopsis laurina (Water Gum). The ones behind the Agapanthus look like Murraya. Your builder would most likely have submitted a Landscape Plan for your development which would should the plants they should install. Re: Who knows what these plants are? 11May 22, 2011 1:18 pm Ms Bean The first tree looks like Elaeocarpus reticulatus (Blueberry Ash). The next is Tristaniopsis laurina (Water Gum). THANKS MS BEAN!! Spot on - did an image search on those names and first one is Elaeocarpus reticulatus Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Will have to confirm Tristaniopsis laurina when i'm out there again. Our plans say that we should have 2 big murrayas planted which they definitely are not.... The smaller ones in the rear however do look like Murraya!! Thanks!!! That concept drives me crazy. They will for a while but... Soils never should be layered and we should always request a compost, not a topsoil. The roots will not develop well with such a shallow layer. If the same volume were turned over through the soil you have to 20-30cm then you will see strong deep root growth and healthier plants, and I mean healthy in 5-10 years not just 1 or 2. Re: Who knows what these plants are? 13May 24, 2011 7:11 am mmm so will the lawn survive? as i asked the landscaper to add extra soil and he said 'nah, she'll be right'... anyway so I'll do the plants to the rear and make sure that there is plenty of compost in the hole that I dig for the plants thanks for the heads up Project History Deposit - 20/4/2010 Land Settled - 20/8/2010 Council - 30/9/2010 Slab - 17/11/2010 Bricks - 28/01/2011 Roof - 5/02/2011 Gyprock - 4/03/2011 Re: Who knows what these plants are? 14Jun 05, 2011 11:35 pm Yeah the lawn will survive, but it will be prone to stress from cold and stress from heat. Its main root growth is going to only ever get to 100mm deep where as you want growth in the top 300mm. The deeper the roots, the less water is needed, the less fluctuations in appearance and the likely you over do the budget and fertiliser in attempts top make it look better all the time. You will never get ahead. Murraya could be a great option for you. It creates a great tall screening hedge but doesn't drop fruit like lily pilly. The flowers smell divine. 2 10239 |
