Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: What is this on my gardenia please? 2May 16, 2011 12:52 pm Its sooty mould caused by aphids mites or scale. I had the same problems with my gardenias, white oil/soap didnt work, yates scale pyrthin worked well. Re: What is this on my gardenia please? 3May 17, 2011 12:31 am Sorry B but there's no sooty mould. However they does look to be brown scale. The white bits, I can't see if it is both white fly and aphids or if it might be hail damage. Just where the leaves get scratches from hail hitting the leaves.. Remember, just because something is "natural" doesn't make it safe. Pyrethrum is as nasty or nastier than many synthetic pesticides. I do suggest the use of oils first. Eco oil in particular as opposed to the petrochemical white oil and pest oils. Eco oil has a number of organic oils and is far more affective and can be used far more regularly. A better option still is to use these... http://www.goodbugs.org.au/Good%20bugs% ... hycus.html http://www.goodbugs.org.au/Good%20bugs% ... hytis.html http://www.goodbugs.org.au/Good%20bugs% ... aemus.html http://www.goodbugs.org.au/Good%20bugs% ... corus.html Get them ordered through some garden centres. By having them in the garden, you are less likely to have problems as they establish them selves at your place Use a pesticide and kill all the good guys and the bad guys and harm birds and the like that may feed on them. It won't be the good guys showing up first to fill the vacuum left in the garden. Any chance of a clearer photo? Re: What is this on my gardenia please? 4May 17, 2011 7:20 am Fair nuff Fu, i thought Pyrethrum was a contact kill spray not systemic like comfydor. So you kill the bugs you aim it at. I have tried the oils with very little success to say the least, i looked into the bugs but the places i looked at sell them in spring as they dont mutiple in the cooler months. Due to the wet the sap suckers are going nuts, they are attacking everything so i had to do something considering the oils and soaps failed. Re: What is this on my gardenia please? 7May 17, 2011 8:36 pm We have this on the fig tree. The leaves are removed and put in the green top bin. Re: What is this on my gardenia please? 8May 20, 2011 1:13 am Still pretty hard to tell but there does look to be maybe mealy bug, aphids, sign of thrip and scale. It would be dead easy if we had it in our hands though to look at Never mind, lets take on a bunch of the methods mentioned. First, as Gone Ducky suggests, get the worst of the leaves off or clip it back a bit. When you do, snip out the longer stems sticking out back to just above where the leaves shoot out from. It will recover quicker. Then take care of the soil a little more than the other plants. Bugs pick on weak plants Make the soil strong Mulch heavily with shredded tree prunnings like that seen here... viewtopic.php?f=19&t=47725 Next try soapy water with some lux soap flakes, if you can mix some neem oil in too. That should sort the aphids (if that is what the darker spots are under the leaf) Then the eco oil. Drench the leaves and stems with it once a week.
