Im looking at ornamental pears. Im going to google some of the plants you suggested. Re: guess what tree this is ? 4May 12, 2011 11:08 pm Fu Manchu fricken lily pilly, Im such a dork - i actually googled 'fricken lily pilly' goes to show how little I know about plants!! I remember reading a post of yours not long ago about seeing what kind of plants your neighbours have - i've been doing that. I think one of the plants that one of my neighbours have (which i really like) is a lily pilly. Re: guess what tree this is ? 5May 12, 2011 11:13 pm Fast growing, Melaleuca nesophila. It's the king Even a small 200mm pot would grow to give the effect you're after in around 3 years, which is bloody fast for a plant. A bit slow for a brickwall though Orn. pears with that effect, wait 5-10 years. Manchurian pear would be the go and there will be a heap of work and new found skills from Homeone's Toparious to do it. Pretty sure he has posted his hedge of Manchurian Pears. I'd be more nervous than Wayne Swan breaking a glass in his hand if I used a pear or similar tree. Oh and deciduous trees don't make for wandering around in the nude during winter so "next door friendly"* because they are poor screens when they drop leaves. * There maybe exceptions to that rule in some weird circumstances. Re: guess what tree this is ? 6May 12, 2011 11:15 pm Chances are a fricken lily pilly comes up as one of my posts Try googling the Fu signal, have a guess who is the number one result next to Obama Re: guess what tree this is ? 7May 13, 2011 3:18 pm Hi Chi Chi,ifyou send me your email address I shall send a couple of pics. of tall hedges. The Manchurian Pear does not look its best at the moment as we are in Autumn but at least you can see how we initially trained the branches to form a box hedge on stilts. The Conifer hedge on the other side was grown by planting Pencil Pines eighteen inches apart so they grow into each other. If you buy small ones, plant them and every so often cut them so as to increase the foliage ,but remember to cut upwards so the new growth grows up and into the tree you will have a hedge like this within two years. Topiarius P.S. send the email as PM Re: guess what tree this is ? 9May 13, 2011 11:08 pm I had the same effect with pittos in my last place. Just remember evergreen drop crap year round on the uber stylish paving while the decidious dump once a year. I don't mind the leaf-drop from either kind, I just sweep them up and chuck them back on the garden. Some people seem to take personal offence at messy leaves cluttering up their pristine pavers though. I love that bare-trunk effect in the pic! It's what I'm working towards with my feijoas. Re: guess what tree this is ? 11May 15, 2011 11:59 am Yeah i just used a battery blower to clear the mess a couple a times a week. One thing i did take exception too was my next door neighbours lilly pilly that hung over our yard, the birds would eat berries all day long and sh** all over the pavers. Hello. I just bought a few acres in Habana, Mackay, and my horses seem to love hanging around under this tree. I would like to name the paddock after this tree. Can… 0 9529 Fellow Perth dweller. Looks like pruns nigra. It's a dark leaf flowering plum. Doesn't get massive and is easily trimmed deciduous tree. Very popular in small gardens in Perth 7 2763 |
