Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 07, 2011 6:43 pm OK need some advice. We are looking at planting along 50 m of post and wire fencing to create some privacy along the side of the house. The ground is a mix of rock and more rock and yes you guessed it more rock and gravel and a bit of clay. so we plan on tube stock or a tray of the smallest sized plants we can get to avoid having to dig anymore than we have to. One of the local nursery's will have their tube/tray stock available for collection on June the 1st. But as they are selling out fast we need to let them know asap. so We are looking for something that will grow 3-41/2 m high and preferably no wider than 3 m. We could prune it a little if it grew more. We are assuming we'd probably need to plant about every 2-2 21/2 m apart. Hubby would prefer the bushes/small trees to be fairly dense. A list of natives possibilities below. The choices they still have available are in no particular order Am interested in comments on how open they'd be and how long they live for. As well as suggestions on what might be best. Hakea laurina ( pin cushion hakea) I like this one how open would it be? Hakea bucculenta ( Red Pokers) not so taken with the flower on this one and it sounds like it might get a bit big Melaleuca lateriflora ( oblong leaf honey myrtle) pics I've seen it isn't that appealing Melaleuca vimibea ( Mohan) looks a lot wider than tall in the pics I've seen. Callistemon glauca speciosus ( albany bottle brush) Looks ok Callistemon phoeniceus (fiery bottlebrush) Looks ok Acacia saligna ( golden wreath wattle- coojong) ok I'm not a huge fan of Acacias and the thought of having a long row of yellow pompom flowered bushes doesn't really excite or thrill me at all. Or does anyone local to me have any other suggestions? remember they have to be no bigger than tube stock. Re: Hedging- Privacy- windbreak type large shrubs. Fu??? 3May 07, 2011 7:03 pm kiwichick true myrtle, or myrtus communis look nice, dense and white scented flowers in summer flower and leaf looks lovely but I just googled and it prefers free draining soil. I have rock/clay and gravel. So it doesn't like to be damp and I can't get a large amount of them in small tube stock size so no good. Not even sure where I could get even one. Re: Hedging- Privacy- windbreak type large shrubs. Fu??? 4May 07, 2011 7:07 pm Kex, you have picked some crackers Some of the best in fact Hakea laurina will get nice and dense with a few clipping campaigns You will will be amazed at the flower show, really something. Melaleuca nesophila, absolute ripper! try see if you can get that. Bucculenta is a ripper and again will respond well to clipping to get them nice and dense. They are the two or three I'd use Plantings are pretty well on the mark Exotic plants in the area concerned would not be advisable. Does it all have to be the same thing because knowing I have seen quite a few pics of your place, I think a mix will be good. Also PM RainbowBright for some ideas, she's pretty switched on too. WOW thanks for the speedy reply Fu The nesophilas are already all sold no more until next year. They sound good. but we don't want to wait another 12 months as the block two over from us has just sold. we need to get started on this hedge asap UNless you know of somewhere to get them? HUbby is keen to have a lot the same but I was thinking one lot along the house length and then something different ( perhaps whatever would be larger) after the house. So about 25 m of each. I've sent a message to rainbowbright. thanks Fu Hi guys We have just removed a very large grape vine which was mounted to a structure along this wall.
