Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 29, 2011 3:31 pm Hi Folks! Our house is nearing completion, so landscaping is about to come to the fore. The bank is springing for the Landscaping which is lovely of them, and we've already secured a trusted professional to do the work. Our block is pretty much dead flat, with a virtually irrelevant rise from the road to the house. Our main issue is that we are on the outside of a corner, and as such we have an expanse of council verge. This raises a number of issues... - Footpaths are already in, and our side of the street DOES NOT and WILL NOT have one, however the council hasn't shed any light as to whether they plan to landscape the verge with anything as part of their street scaping in our development. (Doubtful, given what we've seen in more established parts of the estate, but still a possibility.) - The shape and scope of the verge makes it awkward for me to invisage an appropriate design in our garden without it looking like a big slab of wasted space out the front. - I'm hoping to keep a provision for vehicle access down the side of the house, which restricts use of garden beds on that side. - The Southern side of our block is an easement, so no large trees and no permanent structures! Below is a very rough mudmap of our idea of what we want in a front yard, ie: a path to the street bordered by garden etc. My request is simply for some ideas as to how to design the layout of the front yard to tie in with the verge, without throwing too much money at the verge itself incase it gets dug up by the council or the water company. (The front boundary of our block can be feintly seen as a horizontal line through the lawn and driveway) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thanks in anticipation, rockabilly_kid Homestead Homes SA: The Lamont Bayswood Estate; Aldinga Beach Preliminary Signing: April 2010 Floorplans: 13 June 2010 Building Contract: 19 June 2010 Selections: 28 Sept 2010 Scraped; Trenching: 21 Jan 2011 Slab Poured: 28 Jan 2011 Framing: 17 Feb 2011 | Completed 24 Feb 2011 Roof & Gutters: 02 Mar 2011 Bricks: 03 Mar 2011 Wire-up: 12 Mar 2011 Re: Landscape Layout Help. Open Corner Verge etc. 2Apr 29, 2011 4:36 pm Just drive around Sunday Estate for some ideas - I've seen lots of great looking corner verges and you could put some gravel down for the side drive so you can still have access. Good luck with it - even if it's just mulch and a few plants to start with it will look a lot better than nothing. Open Corner Verge etc. 3May 02, 2011 9:25 am Thanks for the ideas, I had a look Googs maps and couldn't see many in Sunday with the same corner and block configuration as ours which is unfortunate. Think we'll go lawn rather than gravel, as the side access is for rare occasions rather than often. (Washing the car etc). Cheers and good luck with your build. Open Corner Verge etc. 5May 03, 2011 10:59 am I think you misunderstand where i'm coming from. I must admit the diagram could be misconstrued. I have no neighbours on the south border at all. It's all wetlands, thus the entire "sweep" of the corner verge is "ours" to look after. As mentioned, the Council will not give us any information as to whether they plan to street-scape that area of verge. This means we don't want to throw tonnes of money at it in case it gets ripped up. My plea was more for ideas on how to encorporate that fast verge into what's going on in our front yard, not so much ideas on verges, which I've already read through over the course of my time here. Design and layout standpoint rather than horticulture standpoint. Thanks.
