Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 25, 2011 7:38 pm Hi I have just installed a pool (did it myself I am a builder) and want to plant a nice Rear Garden that will be a back drop for the Pool and which can be seen from my Lounge Room. I have had some plans drawn up and would like some advice on these before I purchase because I just realised the area for the plants will be in shade in the winter and sun in the summer as the wall is 2.4 m high and is at the North end of my Block. Your input would be appreciated as I am literally flying blind when it comes to Gardens.totally a KNOOOB !!! Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 2Apr 25, 2011 8:10 pm Wow! I am interested to know how the feature wall was made. The yard looks great already. Are there any particular plants you love that are not included in the plans? Have the plans included plants you like/colour schemes which will suite? Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 4Apr 26, 2011 9:53 pm kiwichick Your plant ideas already sound great. The soil prep is number one to a sucessfull garden though and Mr Fu is the one to tell you how to get it right Ok thanks , how do I get in touch with this Mr Fu ? I went to a Nursery today and I found a million things to choose from !!! I ended up taking a few shots of stuff that I thought maybe would work, so here goes. All the nursery set up displays seem to have plants up the back raised so it gives depth to the gardens and then small plants at the front. Here is a few plants that I liked Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ By http://profile.imageshack.us/user/surfnturf Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ By So to get those rear plants up high do you actually plant them higher like into a planter box like this picture ? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ By http://profile.imageshack.us/user/surfnturf I found a pot that I quite liked (middle one)that might go . I didn't want it to bold as the wall does that as a backdrop. I can't suggest much for plants as I'm guessing you are down south and my gardening experience is all in the tropics where its pretty easy to get anything to grow. A thought I had was to raise the pot on a pedestal of some sort in the centre of the wall and then you could have lower plants either side. That way the gorgeous pot and beuastiful red wall behind it won't get lost behind the foliage. If you planted as per the pictures from your plans the plants growing on the lattice in front of the wall would eventually get thick and then you wouldn't see the wall anymore, and as those strelitzias became big they would block the view of the pot. Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 6Apr 27, 2011 6:59 pm I like the canna lillies, you could have them instead of the bird of paradise. The red flax is wrong, a green strappy leaf is whats required, like the liy turf suggested, it will grow in part shade, deep shade, or full sun. in a moist fertile soil. It has blue trumpets of flowers. The hedging around the cannas and behind the pot, keep it tidy. Then the succulants give an edge to the design. You need the contrast colour in a pot so the brown pot you like is wrong, sorry. It just melts into the red. Cream, concrete or black for contrast with the wall and plants. Mr Fu Manchu has not visited this blog yet obviously. The contrasts in colour are important to show up against your beautifull vibrant wall. The soil depends on what you have in your area as to what to mix with it. Building sometimes compacts the soil, so you need to dig it through and add organic compost and blood and bone. Osmicote pellets are sprinkled on the watering lineto feed the plants. The osmicote are slow release over six months and I use them. Hope this helps Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 9Apr 28, 2011 1:09 am kiwichick I like the canna lillies, you could have them instead of the bird of paradise. The plan shows these 2 big plants 2.4 m high can you buy plants that high ? As for the hedging I looked on my plan is that called EJA 'TomThumb" in the legend ? Have to see what this looks like. I just noticed on the plan as well it shows 103 plants in Total ??? all this in an area of 5 m wide x 1.5 long seems too much !!! The soil I have is a nice earthy brown colour which all the neighbours have as well and they say its good. I will have to turn it over like you say and add those organic mixes. Any other comments appreciated. Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 10Apr 28, 2011 1:13 am kb46 I think that centre pot will look gorgeous against your wall! Yes kb46 , I really liked that pot but kiwichik poo pooed it so now I am a little undecided. the strelitzias you mentioned are they in any of the pictures I took above ?? sorry for being ignorant! Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 12Apr 29, 2011 9:53 pm I agree with Redman. It will make the yard look contemporary and much nicer than just having the feature wall with a pot and some plants. Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 13May 03, 2011 12:27 am I like it Redman Its a small area, I'd use just something like Melaleuca nesophila around the sides clipped narrow. Under planted with a row of Lomandra Seascape or Limewave around there too. or maybe the verbatim Murraya pan. as a hedge. The red wall would look nice with two Magnolia Kay Paris on there and under planted with Lomandra Tropic Belle. The Kay Paris Magnolia are small trees and don't grow wide and look the goods A narrow hedge (and yes you could clip to that narrow width) of Melaleuaca nessie would mean privacy from next door perving into the pool area, which might be bad if there is a hotty next door and you're a single bloke. Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 14May 03, 2011 12:29 am Some posts with these would look pretty cool too Baloskion Didgery Sticks Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 15May 03, 2011 12:31 am What about the Magnolia Kay Paris against the wall in the corner and near the outter edge, and one of those big urns with these didgery sticks growing out the top against the red. Then under plant thta garden bed with Lomandra Seascape. Nice soft flowing native grass Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 16May 03, 2011 7:37 pm I like the idea of the Magnolia Kay Paris and the diggery sticks in the pots. I wondered weather a more broad leafed plant might look better than the grass lomandra Seascape. Can you grow mexican orange blossom there? Re: Single Guy with " NO IDEA" for Rear Garden !!! 17May 04, 2011 2:12 am The Murraya is easier. Similar flower and fragrance. Being a small area the finer leaves of the seascape would work better. The magnolias would provide large enough leaf. The pot will add visual volume also. Not totally sure myself about the digery sticks but they are tidy and different Yeah could work as you say Those cannas are a PITA though. They spend more time chewed by snails and looking ratty than they seem to look good. They need to be cut back in winter and then when it warms they will reshoot new foliage for the snails to chew on. If you live in Cairns they are a go though Soil prep, certified organic compost. Perlite, zeolite and preferably a mulch which can continually break down and form new soil. I bet your going to dump pebbles but that is like driving to Darwin from Melbourne on one tank of fuel. It just won't work out well in time to come. Works well at first though. Mulch from a tree lopper or straws don't blow about. Smash it down nice and thick and hose it in. It beds together and won't budge in the worst storm. Hi All, see above image.
