Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 19, 2011 8:26 am Hi, I'm new to this site so please forgive me if its already been covered. I'm building a house and am at the stage where i need to choose which turf to go for. I see that Fu recommends empire turf, and at this stage this is what i have been leaning towards. I noticed that most posts are in relation to southern climates. I'm in Central Queensland, and just want to know what would be the best turf for this hotter, dryer climate (although lately it hasn't been). I also have a couple of dogs, and would like a hardier, thicker grass than the blue cooch that i currently have. Shouldnt be too much shady areas, but would like my turf to still grow up against the more shady sides of the house. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Re: Turf for a new house 2Apr 20, 2011 12:58 pm Hi Pagey, I am from NSW so different climate but it sounds like you could just go with a Kikuyu? It is the hardiest 'cheapest' type. I would probably recommend just ringing a few turf farms (make sure you call a few because a lot have patents and will push their grasses) in the area and asking them what they suggest. They should know the climate the best! Good luck. Re: Turf for a new house 3Apr 20, 2011 7:18 pm IMO i dont think ez would be able to tough it out if couch can't. A sterile kikuyu would be the go. My neighbour has kik & three dogs and it handles it well even over the colder months down here so you wont have problems in qld. Its just a lot of work to maintain kikuyu. EZ is super tough and wears brilliantly but because it grows slow if you kick a hole in it, it takes ages to repair. Repeated kicking holes in it over and over and it goes to crap. If you have a dog run around the fence then you can choose which ever type you like as it wont get battered as much. Re: Turf for a new house 4Apr 20, 2011 7:20 pm Might add if you do go the dog run option DONT get kikuyu. Its a pain in the a, if you dont need it, dont get it. Re: Turf for a new house 5Apr 20, 2011 7:43 pm Is Sir Walter suitable for your area? It says in some reviews that it scored tops in the "wear" category, and not too bad in all others. http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=44969&start=0 But shhhh, don't tell Fu what I said My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Turf for a new house 6Apr 20, 2011 10:40 pm Yeah Lex sir wally is alright oz wide, but when it comes to high wear a home owner is better using a grass with rhizomes that can re-shoot from under the ground once the surface grass has been worn away. Buffalo doesn't do that. Not saying SW or other buffs won't work, because they most certainly will, they just won't repair as quick/well as kik, ez or couch. Re: Turf for a new house 7Apr 20, 2011 11:15 pm There is so many threads on this topic we could start a forum in its own right Re: Turf for a new house 9Apr 21, 2011 1:25 pm Yep you can, as long as its not too shady or getting any foot traffic it will be ok. I personally wouldn't be laying Empire Zoysia or any couch this late though. Re: Turf for a new house 11Apr 21, 2011 2:20 pm Any of the buffalo's, palmetto sir walter etc and kikuyu will be ok. You can lay EZ and couch its just a little risker as they are less winter active than buffalo. Re: Turf for a new house 13Apr 22, 2011 8:15 am Fu, My ez has stopped growing and is starting to slowly discolour. Thats why i say risky. Helped a mate lay palmetto the other day and its very healthy compared and it came from a colder area than melbourne. They using concrete or timber sleepers? Timber or steel uprights? Any drainage behind sleeper? 3 5830 Yes well there solution is to blame everyone else while I a 65yr old woman with major medical problems have to just continue to boil water and wash myself in a bucket… 2 15998 If you make sure all taps inside and out are turned off, what does the water meter show if you leave it for a while. 2 20229 |
