Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 08, 2011 11:29 am Good Morning Guys, Initially, I wanted to put some sort of palm tree there. But then after I have been following a few threads here and there on the forum, I came to the conclusion that the palm that I want is too slow growing or very hard to keep in great stance in Melbourne. (Is that right or did I miss something?) I am trying to look for a feature tree for the front of the house at the moment. Basically, the couple of contraints I had in mind were as follows: 1. White Flowers 2. Have a nice scent Obviously I dont want it to be too bulky either. What are your views? Once again, the white flowers is just what I think would go well with the front of the house. I would rather a tree that has a nice scent as my predominant factor. Here is a picture of the front where the tree will be going: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 2Apr 09, 2011 12:26 pm Here's some to start you Elaeocarpus reticulatus Michellia doltsopa Magnolia grandiflora little gem Magnolia stellata Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 3Apr 09, 2011 7:30 pm I have the same question. Am considering Magnolia grandiflora little gem simply because it's an easy choice and also because it will not grow too large. Also was thinking of some lilly pilly that only grows to a small tree (max 3m), but grows fast and then stops growing . Anyone knows of those?? Or a murraya which you train to grow as a small tree (eventually). Or a gardenia, the one that grows like a tree (not sure of the name). But, I think they are very slow growing My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 4Apr 09, 2011 7:56 pm What about an apple or pear? A productive plant, yet gives a better show than most. The little ornamental Manchurian Pear would be a good option. Frangipani of course. Lemon tree would smell great too. Wonderful flower. Choose Eureka and get flower and fruit for much of the year.Better still a lime tree. Limes are expensive to buy in the shop Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 5Apr 09, 2011 8:05 pm we planted 30 lilly pillys today they only grow to 3 meters and have white flowers - we are using them as a screening plant along the boundary of our place for privacy we are also planting 20 flowering ash along our driveway. have you considered them? There are a few that are genuinely are pest resistant. Many claim it though. I have listed loads of way better choices. Melaleuca Nessie is a cracker. Faster, tougher, cheaper and has denser foliage Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 7Apr 09, 2011 8:53 pm just saw this thread, I too planted 3 lillie pillies today, but mine grow to 5 mets. didnt know anything about them till yesterday at the shop when I saw them for $6.99 and that they grew to 5 mets and you can eat the berries or make jam, so got them..now I have just read fu's comment. eeek. and now I see I am just one of many planting them Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 8Apr 09, 2011 9:09 pm me too, i went to many nurserys over the past 12 months trying to work out what to plant and all recommended lilly pillys. Cause we are planting sooo many, i got them tubestock from bunnings at $3 a tube. much better than $18.95 our local nursery wanted to charge for larger pots. The 3m one seems interesting. Edit What about a camelia? It would be lovely, pitty for the slow growth ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 10Apr 09, 2011 11:10 pm we planted Syzygium australe, they grow till about 3-4 metres. Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 12Apr 10, 2011 7:34 am lex, it says syzygium australe 'lilli pillie' but mine says a mid sized tree to 5m we shall see if it is 3 or 5!!! I just wanted to block the neighbours house, hence only 3 of them, cos our water tanks block the rest, hee hee! they can be hedges or trees. They have red new growth, white cotton ball flowers, which turn into cherry sized fruit, after searching on google after I planted them to see what they would look like mature, I didnt come across anything about being disease prone, other than how hardy they were. now we are in our home, I have popped into this forum, HAVE NEVER been in here before, as not interested in plantings. But as you move through a build, this becomes the first place to hang out once you have moved in. Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 13Apr 10, 2011 10:47 am Thanks, guys . It looks like there is yet another subgroup within the Syzygium Australe group - maybe that's why yours are described as having different heights My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 15Apr 10, 2011 11:52 am i dont mind if they grow to 5m, being on 5 acres we are flexible, i just wouldnt want them to grow to 10m Our Acreage Build The Lakeview Lodge - Beechwood Homes 01/04/10 YES 2010 - Deposit paid 23/09 - PCI CANCELLED 28/09 - PCI - will it happen.-18 months later 07/10/11 - ITS OURS..WOOHOO Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 17Apr 11, 2011 10:03 am I'm going to have a Red Wine Magnolia in my front yard, should only grow to 3.5 meters (I will probably prune so it's not as high) But it has beautiful cup like flowers that smell like wine! Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 18Apr 11, 2011 10:43 am Thank you so much everyone for their recommendations. I read on every single recommendation you suggested. I must admit I really like the flowers of the magnolia and it smells nice too. But ideally I would like that magnolia to stay around 1.5-2 m so that it does not occupy the whole front yard. I cannot also disregard the benefit of the eureka lemon tree. All year round plant. It ticks all the boxes and has an added benefit of being able to use the fruit in everyday cooking (on a baked or pan friend fish...yum) and could probably help in making my own lemonade in summer. Ahhhh But then while reading about those different types of lemon, the kaffir limes got my attention and I kinda like it too. So, I think the best way to make the final call would be to head to a local nursery this weekend in order to see the shortlisted ones and then go from there. Re: Looking for a feature tree - Help Me Plz 19May 02, 2011 1:27 am If you are after something to 2m or even 3m then you are not looking for a tree but a shrub that you will need to clip to form a tree shape. A small tree is one that grows to 5m or so. You would not look twice at a little tree which is 5m tall. You'd not even notice it as you walk down the road. Do a search for feature tree, there are hundreds of ideas as this is a topic that is asked almost as much as lawn questions.
