Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 09, 2009 3:26 pm I've heard that a lot of types of grasses can potentially be quite allergenic for dogs. Buffalo is a bad one according to the vet. Does anyone know what types of grass would be considered safe? I intend on fostering dogs for a rescue group (plus have 2 of my own), so would expect quite a few dogs to be coming through... I'd hate for them to become itchy because of my grass! Cheers! Re: Dog friendly grasses (low-allergy) 2Jun 09, 2009 5:44 pm In my experience, if a dog as been diagnosed with a grass allergy, it's a grass allergy, regardless the type (of grass). If you are able to have a small paved area that you can shut a dog on, that is probably a better solution. If you are able to trim the hair around & under the paws of dogs that are esp hairy, this may help as it allows more air to circulate. Keep some Malaseb wash (from your vet) on hand to bathe paws in a dilute solution to reduce irritation. Westies are notorious for allergies Good luck with the rescue babies. I could quite easily block off the grassed areas if need be, and malaseb wash could be useful for my parent's dog - he has mild irritations that aren't quite bad enough to treat with medications. Will def try it out - thanks! PS - Awww....gotta love Westies After some ideas on making our patio kid friendly . Currently we have exposed aggregate.
