Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 09, 2011 1:17 am Hi All, We are still doing work in our yard, and are probably 1 - 2 months away from being in a position where we could get our existing lawn out and a new lawn in. My concern is that it will be quite cold and wet at this time of year and a new lawn might not take. Is it silly to put a new lawn down in say June/July? Thanks, Chris Re: Can a new lawn be laid in winter? 2Apr 09, 2011 6:13 pm Over here in Vic they still sell warm season grasses during the colder months. They sometimes get them from interstate depending on how good the local stock is. They do advise that it's best to lay from Sept/October till April, but you can still lay it outside of those months. Keep the seasol/liquid fert and wetting agent into the soil to keep the turf healthy while it's dormant. Remove weeds by hand, which will come up through the rolls as the turf isn't growing quick enough for it to smother the weeds coming through Planned Landscape Constructions http://www.plannedlandscape.com.au Find us on facebook http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id= ... 9907611509 Can a new lawn be laid in winter? 3Apr 09, 2011 7:36 pm I advise not to use liquid fert. In fact over here in WA we did nearly see laws made preventing or restricting it's use due to how grossly inefficient they are. That also means they are very poor at giving value for money. Liquid composts are the go. I have written loads on doing lawns, care in winter and most importantly how to properly get soil right prior to laying. Using perlite, zeolite and certified organic compost absolutely means wetting agents aren't so needed. These can harm soil health and should only be used on existing poorly prepped lawns. If in the west, as well as those amendments mentioned, make sure there is plenty of bentonite clay turned through the soil. Absolutely essential. So with that in mind even supposed cold sensitive Empire Zoysia will go fine. Use lawn top soil or lawn mixes and DPM and expect some probs Here in WA? I'll hook you up with where to get all you need. Re: Can a new lawn be laid in winter? 4Apr 09, 2011 8:00 pm Chatted to a chap from a big turf company at the melb flower & garden show last weekend and he was saying they now are happy to lay in winter that gets no traffic and full sun. Eg front yard. Like planned said the only problem is lack of stock. Re: Can a new lawn be laid in winter? 5Apr 09, 2011 10:24 pm I think the message is very slowly getting through to the old school in turf, that far more thorough soil prep is needed now as we learn more about sustainable landscaping and garden design. Here at the Perth Garden Show, the turf guys are saying it a little more. Nick Bell who is known Australia wide as one of the best has totally come round on his entire life's thinking on turf and now also says to use amendments and composts. Re: Can a new lawn be laid in winter? 6Apr 10, 2011 11:38 am Yeah the fella I spoke with was advising most people with clay to rotary hoe their existing soil adding organic matter with sand. He wasn't an advocate for turf top soil. Can a new lawn be laid in winter? 7Apr 10, 2011 4:25 pm So wonderful to hear Now to get all the test saying it and we can all enjoy lawns at their best Re: Can a new lawn be laid in winter? 9Apr 12, 2011 10:44 pm Thanks for all the tips. I am just about finished with the cement mixer on the back lawn, so I'll look to kill off and remove the old stuff. I am committed to soil prep also. I've seen loads of lovely lush lawn and that is what I am after. I don't want to water it loads and have it hammered by weeds and diseases, so I'll provide it a good foundation and let it grow on that. Thanks again for all the advice. I'll post some pics when we eventually get it down. P.S -> Do you reckon I need to kill the lawn if we are getting soil removed? We have approx 100mm of sand that our existing "lawn" is growing on, and we want to get that removed to allow us to get some organic compost etc in to the area and also help to level the back lawn with the connecting paving. Given we are likely to remove so much sand, would you suggest still killing the existing lawn? It is mostly Kikuyu/Cooch (Or Couch...however it is spelt). Re: Can a new lawn be laid in winter? 10Apr 12, 2011 10:57 pm It's up to you. If you want peace of mind, then kill it with a combo of fertilising the rubbish you have, then a week later smash it with a roundup (glypho) and seasol mix with a dash of dishwashing liquid. Spray morning and watch for rain. It will hamper the results. Hang on you live in Perth so it won't rain anyway I had new concrete laid, extended the alfresco and had the sidewalks concreted too. I noticed the concreter didn't put the expansion foam anywhere, there are expansion… 0 8407 Hey everyone, With winter just around the corner, I'm starting to think about how to prepare my home and garden for the cooler weather.
