Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 27, 2011 4:09 pm Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me? I have started to plant some Lilly Pilly Acmena Smithii along my back fence and Magnolia Little Gems along the side fence in my backyard. I wanted a bit of a hedge along these fences as the view of the neighbours roofs are a focal point when I go out the back yard. I wanted these trees to distract from the view of the roofs. Can anyone help me with the distances I should plant them at? I've put a couple of each in at about a metre apart and they look abit close together. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks Re: Planting distances for little gems and lilly pilly's 2Mar 27, 2011 4:33 pm I though Acmena's grew quite large - I would think fully grown, from one side of the tree to the other (leaf to leaf) would be at least 5m across. Would 2 or 3 Acmena's across the back fence be enough? How long is your fence? Don't know too much about Magnolia's...I would think they are bit smaller though so you could plant a couple more depending on how long the fence is. Re: Planting distances for little gems and lilly pilly's 3Mar 28, 2011 1:27 pm Lilly Pilly Acmena Smithii - plant 1m apart for these... they will not grow as large when planted together like this, but will grow very fast and will be a very dense hedge. As for the little gems I would go a little closer 80-90cms. these are alot slower growing but the flowers are beautiful (although they dont last long). It didn't say how wide they would grow. They are quite small at the moment so its hard to tell if they will be ok at that distance. I wasn't to fussed about having a dense hedge but think that would be the best for the back fence as my little west highland terrier keeps stirring up the bull mastiff on the other side. The bull mastiff jumped over the fence into my backyard once so I'm hoping these trees will deter that and they will also make it difficult for may dog to sit right up against the fence looking for trouble all the time. The little gems are beautiful, its one of my favourite plants. I had one in a pot for a while and it has grown really well, i've now put it in the ground so its a bit larger than the other two newer ones I planted. I think I will just leave them for now....my back yard has been a abit like musical plants lately because I haven't been able to decide what to plant. Thanks Helen Re: Planting distances for little gems and lilly pilly's 5Apr 06, 2011 1:50 am For a screen I'd be planting a pace apart. That way as they get bigger they will compete for nutrients and growth rates slow. Start clipping from the get go. Magnolias, I'd be also looking at a maximum 2 paces. 8 6156 I recently went through a similar renovation and move scenario when updating our family home.
