Also use a certified organic compost way over "topsoil". Soils need to be turned through and mixed into what you have at present. This is explained in the two turf threads. Also what is incredibly essential is to add zeolite, perlite and spongolite to that mix. Vital for any soil in an urban environment. These will all be investments and not costs. The very things that in time to come, as in years ahead, will allow a garden or turf be problem free. I see many train wrecks being created and money wasted everyday. Lay down even 200mm of soil with out mixing it in and that will be the extent of the root zone. Come summer the plants (turf included) will stress and need a huge amount of water. Only to not be able to absorb the water because the heat in that shallow layer of soil will have died off. It takes around 4 weeks of favourable conditions for the fine feeder roots to regrow.
