Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 25, 2011 5:28 pm Some of my murrayas don't look very good. Yes, they've been growing but over the last couple of months, the new growth has been covered with tiny black bugs & the leaves have become curly. I've tried spraying with white oil but this has had no effect. ANy suggestions? They were doing so well... Sorry, can't help - better wait for Fu. I think you're right. I"ve done some googling & things don't look good for my murrayas.............apparently this little bug attacks when the plant is weak. But I've been watering regularly & giving them b&b, seasol & mosasses & my murrayas have been growing beautifully; they don't look stressed IT seems that this bug is VERY difficult to eradicate; but I don't want to go down the chemcial path(CONFIDOR) , if I can avoid it. Has anyone got any suggestions ? Maybe, I've overdone it with the watering, etc..... ?? I don't water mine, I can't remember when I last seasol'd and they are in need of another clip. Maybe you need to stop mollycoddling them LOL. I also found that they really took off in the second year - these are 18 months old now. The plants are loving all the rain, followed by the warm weather we have had in Brisbane. So do the weeds, as you can see! I have a lot of garden work to do as soon as I am able (post op). Hopefully it will be a bit cooler in a month or so when I can get stuck into it. I don't water mine, I can't remember when I last seasol'd and they are in need of another clip. Maybe you need to stop mollycoddling them LOL. I think you're right arkanah I planted murrayas in my 1st home years ago, did nothing to them at all & they flourished beautifully. NO probs with them AT ALL !!! Here, they've been nurtured & watered regularly & look what's happened Just goes to show, mollycoddling is no good for anyone & anything, in this case ! I spray my Viburnums the other day. They are rife at the moment. I also just tend to clip off the really infested growth and bin it straight away. Colonies tend to breed really fast. They love fresh new growth. Keep the plants strong to help resist damage. Aphids will also distort new growth if left unchecked. THey're long & stick-like in shape & huddle so close together that you can't see the leaf stem. Just try soapy water (made from old school soap flakes) with some euc and tea tree oil in it. Just a dash. In the mean time keep the molasses coming. It may even be a nutrient deficiency but be patient, they certainly won't die. In time they may even sort themselves out. If you must use a fertiliser, use a slow release, in particular the new "Osmocote plus organics" Top up the mulch forst though. Nice and thick Raw mulch too. Not composted black muck. Re: SICK MURRRAYAS - FU or ANYONE ELSE ????? 11Apr 06, 2011 2:29 pm Fu I've tried to get shots of the li'l' critters but my camera doesn't like close-ups! I couldn't take any shots of them now anyhow because the constant rain has washed them off . THey're gone! So maybe the murrayas will get a chance to recover Meanwhile I will file your recipe in case the buggers come back Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: SICK MURRRAYAS - FU or ANYONE ELSE ????? 14Apr 06, 2011 4:57 pm It has just occurred to me Southies, you do know that I meant a sharp burst of water from a hose (which was equivalent to the constant rain we had as you said), not an actual physical bashing from the hose?? I can see you out there in your slippers bashing and swearing at the little bugs with the garden hose maybe not. Sorry should have been more precise in my description re the hose... www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: SICK MURRRAYAS - FU or ANYONE ELSE ????? 16Apr 06, 2011 5:06 pm I didn't think so but wanted to clarify just in case, wouldn't want others to misunderstand my blonde ramblings. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: SICK MURRRAYAS - FU or ANYONE ELSE ????? 18Jun 15, 2013 12:52 pm Touching base on this thread, just in case anyone was having the same probs & was wondering how my murrayas were doing............they are just fine.......doing really, really well............they survived whatever was bothering them.........awesome plant.....sooo tough. Definitely the best shrub around. Beautiful, amazing scent, tidy (does not create mess), very tough, long lived, easy to keep in control, reliable, tolerate a LOT! Glad yours prove it all! I never saw this thread before (ie. when I needed it last year), so looking at arkanah's plants, it is very clear that I planted mine too close ... now I will have to move them - if I can!
