Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: One year on 22Mar 28, 2011 10:12 am I like the blue shade the said feral panda is wearing! Actually - I like your paving too! Much nicer than our mud, surrounded by mud interspersed with patches of green! Re: One year on 24Apr 01, 2011 9:31 am Awwww...I thought you might have referred to him as your little panda bear at home-I'm sure he wouldn't find that at all embarrassing! We just wanted to make the most of the small space we have, and create a peaceful oasis that was low maintenance. I think we succeeded. Re: One year on 30Apr 06, 2011 8:07 am I'm interested to see how the colder temps over winter affect things this year. I'll be cutting back cannas and some other things, which will grow back in Spring...but how much more growth can we get over the coming year? Stay tuned... Re: One year on 32Apr 07, 2011 8:26 am Well, preparation was fairly basic - the landscapers dug over the cruddy existing soil and then added some really good stuff to begin with. Plus I've regularly applied Seasol, Powerfeed and molasses and topped up mulch, but that's about it. We've been very lucky with weather conditions, which have been perfect for getting a garden established - lots of rain, yet still plenty of sunshine, and relatively mild temperatures through last winter. I did choose plants pretty carefully. I wanted to avoid anything that was too precious about its requirements, as I just don't have the time to baby anything. I wanted the look of a tropical garden around the entertaining area, but without actually using tropical plants - because I knew they simply wouldn't survive here. So there was a bit of research and a bit of effort, but it didn't take any special knowledge or skill to achieve what I've done. Any idiot could do it. Re: One year on 33Apr 07, 2011 10:14 am Hey Kek, I got a couple of questions for ya if you don't mind. You know that oil type of lamp (made of bamboo or wood not sure) where did you get them from? I was trying to look on ebay or online but i could not find any. :-l How are they when you light it up at night? Also, forgot to say your backyard is truly inspiring. Love how the green have evolved and established themselves. Re: One year on 34Apr 07, 2011 10:51 am Looks fantastic Kek! What a year or so to be establishing a new garden, no heat waves and heaps of rain and humidity. The agaves love the rain don't they, I have had to move one which basically doubled in size over spring/summer. Re: One year on 35Apr 07, 2011 11:00 am Love the before and after shots - just amazing - you certainly achived the look you were after. Can't remember what grass you used for the area round your washing line (mondo?), but ours has gone bonkers this year. It was planted by the previous owners at the bottom of the steps to the house (one side gets permanent shade, the other part shade) and both have grown so much and sent out little plantlets all over the place. Going to move it all and use it to line the driveway I think! Re: One year on 38Apr 07, 2011 2:05 pm What an amazing difference in a year!! It looks amazing! I'm so glad "any idiot could do it" cause this little idiot will be giving it a red hot go at end of the year and I don't have much of a green thumb! I was trying to look on ebay or online but i could not find any. :-l How are they when you light it up at night? Bunnings have them (or look at the Reject Shop and similar places) - they're pretty cheap. They throw off a bit of light if you have enough of them, but they also burn citronella oil, so help keep mozzies away. The only problem with the cheap ones is, it's hard to get replacement wicks for them. None of the ones I can find fit, so they only lasted for a few uses. Luckily I think we got them on special for about $4 each. karry327 I'm so glad "any idiot could do it" cause this little idiot will be giving it a red hot go at end of the year and I don't have much of a green thumb! BeatrixKiddo Looks fantastic Kek! What a year or so to be establishing a new garden, no heat waves and heaps of rain and humidity. The agaves love the rain don't they, I have had to move one which basically doubled in size over spring/summer. We were definitely lucky with the weather! I tried to make it pretty drought-proof, but I was dreadng the twice a week 6:00am watering sessions ...which never even eventuated. I forgot to give bel one more piece of advice - remember to apply snail bait after rain.... those nasties love to munch on everything. Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 5994 Very common on rendered homes Smaller suppliers get the lower quality raw materials 6 9112 4 9409 |
