I seen the limelights but I didn't know if that would match together. Perhaps another grass? I don't want to take the focus away from the paws. The end ones are the originals & all the others have been replaced as they died off. I also planted in 7 'Joey paws' but they did not survive at all which I am very disappointed about. This is it for the paws. If they die off again we'll replace them with something else I love the paws. They are beautiful but it's better when they stay alive. Winter has made my lawn turn yellow. If I had of kept up my fertilizing and care it would probably still be green. Re: Dirt Help - Alfresco garden! 24Jul 10, 2012 3:20 pm We lost all of our paws as well ... but when I checked what was wrong the developer had just dumped some soil over what was there so the drainage was no good ... I've put agapanthus in there now after adding some organic compost and they are doing great. Just put some molasses on your lawn and some powerfeed and seasol .. that's what we've done and it's been nice and green - haven't done it for a while though with all the rain ... Can see your new screens ... looking good! Can see your new screens ... looking good! We have really poor drainage where our paws are as well. We are trying hard to keep them alive and well.. Native fertiliser. lots of molasses and natural mulch. We'll see how we go. I don't mind the agapanthus.. I planted in some bulbs Jonquills (I think that's what they were).. we'll see how they go. Not a great combination of plants. I just would like that area full and bushy. Grass got some worm tea & molasses last weekend. Powerfeed the weekend before. I need to maintain it more. I never have time anymore it seems. There is always something to be done. How are you going? Re: Dirt Help - Alfresco garden! 27Jul 31, 2012 12:40 am Using fertiliser is what would have made it the way it is. Me saying that is something that really gets up the nose of many fert companies and their marketing. The less you use those things to grow plants, the better your garden gets. Plants grow best when the microbes are fed instead of the lawn or plant. Fertiliser kills the microbes living on the roots. Then in extremes of temps/conditions the lawn turns to poo. Kangaroo paws have been so stuffed about with by dudes in lab coats they really struggle in the long term these days. Its only the unadulterated varieties that do well these days. Finding them in WA is easy but not so easy over east. Re: Dirt Help - Alfresco garden! 28Jul 31, 2012 6:12 am We have a row of them in also, a couple seem to go alright and promoted as Kings Park Kangaroo Paws. Did I read somewhere that it's a good idea to burn them down to the roots at some time of the year so their natural ability to bounce back takes over and they grow back bigger and stronger? They seem to have their stems die off so I just cut when they die. Re: Dirt Help - Alfresco garden! 29Jul 31, 2012 1:07 pm We cut them back in March when our hottest weather is around. You guys would do the same earlier when your hottest weather is around, I think December/early Jan from memory? Don't need to set fire to them. It a bit drastic. There is a thread already about how to cut them back and their care with photos. When I say the West Australian varieties, I mean the ones that just grow in the bush. Marketed, PBR'd (copy written) varieties generally are short term performers. Hello! I've alfresco pitch of 3 degrees sitting just below the highlight window. Need advice on below: 1.
