Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 18, 2011 5:38 pm Hi
Now that the house is built and the majority of the landscaping is finished, the last part of the backyard is just mocking me, so I'd love any ideas that people may have on what to do. Its the main thing you see when looking out the back. I want to somehow hide this fabulously ugly shed and water tank, but still leave access for the cubby. Pictures probably tell the story much better: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Any ideas gratefully received ! I was going to go with a slatted screen, but was going to go with the metal style and tropical type of garden to try and hide it a bit. A screen in this sort of style .... Can't believe people suggested fencing... almost as bland a view as the shed Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 6Mar 18, 2011 9:11 pm Thanks for the suggestions so far - much appreciated ! The best I could come up with with DH was to ring the landscaper and give him what remaining money we have left I should probably add that the area we're looking at covering is over 10 metres long so that's a lot of slats or a lot of plants either way Keep 'em coming ! Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 7Mar 18, 2011 9:12 pm I think your garden looks very nice. Personally wouldnt put a fence, even a nice slatted one, around the shed - will just accentuate it more IMO. I would plant a brightly coloured creeper or two along the shed wall where it faces the garden (except the door , of course ) Will jazz up garden no end - and as it draws your eye, tank will naturally be less noticeable. I would leave tank as is - looks alright to me. Matching timber to the cubby! Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 11Mar 19, 2011 10:46 am Further to my own previous creeper suggestion - I would also plant a creeper along the back fence - in the exposed area between the cubby and the shed. And even against the side fences as well - area in front of tank / neighbours and cubbyhouse / neighbours. (can you tell I like plants? ) Nothing wrong with seeing the shed and tank, they are not ugly IMO - just needs some colour and greenery to break up blandness, not more structures. I really dont get these slatted fence ideas - and will make it a pain when getting things like lawnmower out the shed and haveing to manouvre (sp?) around the fence instead of straight path to lawn Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 12Mar 19, 2011 2:41 pm I'd screen it and then plant in front of the screen. We used brush fencing (a cheap option) attached to posts/rails set in an L-shape to hide our ugly shed at our old place. It also gave me a handy hidden spot for a potting bench and somewhere to store spare pots and other uglies that didn't fit in the shed. We then had a garden bed in front of the screen, about 1.5 metres deep, planted with shrubs, bulbs and annuals. That widened out next to the "L" to a 3-4 metre garden bed. I don't have a pic, unfortunately, but it was a much nicer outlook. Here, we've used slatted timber to screen off our bins out the front: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ In our entertaining area, most of the fence is hidden behind a feature screen: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ You can see the back of the other small timber screen that hides the HWS and shed from view on the left there. We also have a reed screen with some potted plants in front along the side fence to give us a nicer view from the lounge windows: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And I've just planted some bamboo to hide the fence and provide some shade for the sliding door at the back of the house (can't wait for it to thicken up ): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Colorbond fencing may be practical, but I don't want to look at it out my windows. Same goes for sheds, tanks and hot water units. Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 13Mar 19, 2011 5:53 pm Thanks for all your replies, I've got a few things to think about ! Kek, your garden is beautiful, very modern and resort-y. I do like the render and timber combination on your big wall, it breaks things up so it doesn't look so expansive and overpowering. Hmmmm Helyn and all, I agree we definitely need some sort of climber along the back fence to soften the look and erase the colourbond. That alone would make it look much more appealing. Saw something at the garden shop today which I have now promptly forgotten the name of, but it was a climber with big glossy leaves and large trumpet shaped flowers. They came in a few colours but the red ones were lovely. I may have to go back tomorrow for a second look. I confess I also had a mad moment and purchased 5 x 1 metre high lilly pilly "Big Red" (bargain price, so couldn't be left at the shop ) - to replace those craptacular murrayas in the garden bed in front of the shed. Fast growing my rs, they've been a complete disappointment, the only thing in the garden that hasn't grown I'm starting to get a mental picture of a centrally placed render/timber screen spaning the length of the shed, placed halfway between the beds and the shed, with the shrubs in front and some climbers along the back fence....not sure about the tank.... Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 14Mar 20, 2011 10:29 am im also looking at this option and thinking of ned kelly passionfruit vines front of mine. will block it off and provide fruits Harrisdale backyard finally done! Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 15Mar 21, 2011 11:28 am My parents have a male and female kiwifruit on either side of the shed door with some posts and wire trellis over the top of the shed. Most of the year the shed is covered in big green leaves and the bonus is that it produces fruit too. I saw kiwis at the nursery on the weekend for about $10ea - so for $20 and a bit of materials for structure you could have your shed covered. Another plant that looks awesome but doesn't have the same sort of coverage is the Mandevilla. ETA: Their kiwis are as old as me and still growing and fruiting, unlike passionfruit which seem to only last a couple of years. Second Time 'Round Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 16Mar 22, 2011 11:39 am Hi Evelyng What would I do with your backyard ... 1) paint the fences the same colour. I would do it in the same colour as the shed but you could also paint the two galv fences in dark green to match your 'good' fence. I think this would make the space look less busy. 2) grow creepers along all of the fences. Those mesh panels that Trevor put in at my place were cheap and effective for this. 3) grow creepers along the shed 4) plant a tree where your murrayas are - a substanital tree (e.g. jacarandah) - you have the room for it. I think your eye would then be drawn to the tree rather than the shed and tank. Over time it would also create a nice shady place for your kids to play 5) reserve deciding what (if anything) to do to cover the tank until you see how changes to the rest of the yard work out. Just my suggestions of course Re: Hide my ugly shed - ideas please ?!? 17Mar 22, 2011 11:52 am I like your ideas Steg esp painting everything to match - what about painting the shed (only need to do one side and that will be covered with vines eventually if you decide to go that way) and fence the same colour as the rainwater tank - it would all fade into the background then. The different colours do attract the eye. Good thinking and something I will bear in mind in the future.
