Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 21, 2007 10:42 am Hi all.
I'm just about finished my front yard and will get stuck into the back straight after christmas. I'm planning to pave about 35m2 and lay turf on the rest. The problem I have is over the last 6 months since we moved in I have noticed a bit of a drainage problem. The neighbours behind us and to one side all drain into our land and I know that it is their responsibility to deal with the run off as yet there is no fences at all and no ag drains to deal with water run off. I would expect that once they have there run off issues delt with I would still have a drainage problem. Half of the back yard is shale and the water pools. I have 2 square drains in the back yard. I have seen the back yard ankle deep in water I know I must make sure the drains are the lowest point so that water can fall into them. The half that I pave is not a real problem. Will water falling in the turf find its way to the drain? How do I or on what should I lay the turf so the any water will go into the drain? I have about 150mm to play with at the moment. What should I be laying the turf on? The front yard I used 100mm of 80/20 turf underlay. Apparently the sand in the mix helps drain the soil. Will this turf underlay be sufficient? Obvoiusly having the top of the drain at or below ground level is what I want and not at turf level. Do I need to have a concrete/paving/brick surrounding the drain? sorry for all the questions as I dont really know what I should be asking. Cheers Re: How to lay turf on shale with a drainage problem? 2Dec 21, 2007 12:47 pm install aggy drains

dig a perimiter trench around the lower section/s of your land if that is were the water problem is if need dig a trech or 2 if needed through the centre of your land lay sleeved aggy drain pipe min. 65mmin them ensuring they have correct water flow direction at the end of the trench/s install 300mm x 300mm or 400mm x 400mm silt pits these then conect to mains storm water fill the trench/s with plumbers scoria place the good lawn blend topsoil on top and lay turf you may also want to look at appling gypsum to the natural soil/shial etc and rotary hoe it in to help with permiabilty before good soil application note : this is only general advise as i havnt seen your site Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com 2 5822 Hi HomeOne, I'm in the midst of landscaping a cat run down the side of my house, and the recent rains have me wondering if I need to install some sort of drainage.
