Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 04, 2011 8:53 am Hi Fu and everyone else, About two weeks ago we bought a quite established weeping cherry for our front garden. It stayed in the pot for another week while we prepare the soil for the garden bed. About a week ago we planted the cherry and it looked great. However, a few days ago I started noticing that some of the leaves were starting to get brown spots. And now its seems like the tree is dying. Would any experts tell me whether this tree is dying and what I could do to help improve its condition? I would be shattered if it dies, especially because its only been in the ground for a week!! I am sure someone more knowledgable than me will chip in, the only thing I can add is that the very un seasonal cold/wet weather we are having is causing confusion in a lot of deciduous trees. My nectarine tree has dropped all it's leaves and so has the next door neighbours plum. One minute it's hot humid and pouring the next it's 15 degrees and overcast all day. I have noticed plenty of other trees leaves are already changing colour which is nearly 2 months early. I think the weather is playing a part in your cherry's yuck look combined with something else. Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 3Mar 04, 2011 10:24 am No it doesnt look good at all! I hope its just being deciduous and just having its leaves falling. That would be heaps better than it dying!! Any little sap sucking bugs on top or underneath the leaves? I have lace bugs and mites going nuts atm in my garden. You have probably googled it but here is some additional info; http://www.buzzle.com/articles/weeping- ... blems.html Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 5Mar 04, 2011 10:46 am No I dont think I saw any bugs when I was having a close look at the leaves. Not too sure about the branchs, I thought that was normal. But now that you pointed it out, it does look abit scaley doesnt it? Oh man, i'm so depressed right now! I assume you followed fu's tips, plenty of organics mixed over a few metres not just the planting hole? Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 7Mar 04, 2011 11:05 am hrmz, no i didnt follow that instruction, I only ferterlised the planting hole! oh no, what have i done?!! The tree is actually planted in the middle of our new lawn. We put alot of top soil there, maybe 20cm of topsoil and then planted the weeping cherry and the turf. We dug a hole which was double the size of the pot and put ferterliser in the hole before we planted the tree. Is there such a thing as over ferterlising because I put quite abit of it in the hole and also around the roots. Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 8Mar 04, 2011 11:23 am Yeah there is such a thing as too much fertilizer. It can actually burn the roots, slow release fert like osmocote won't burn but its still not really that effective compared to surface applications. You will be right if you used an organic fert its unlikely that it will burn. You haven't done the ten out of ten soil prep but its sounds like you haven't got it wrong either. The best I can add check that the soil isn't waterlogged by digging around the outside of the root ball and checking, especially if you have clay. Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 9Mar 05, 2011 9:25 am perhaps you could also give it a seasol drink. this can help with planting shock. I'd be a bit worried about the fertilser if it's burning the roots though. Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 10Mar 09, 2011 12:00 am and that is what is doing it. Too much fertiliser will have killed much of the soils living organisms and burnt the fine feeder roots, maybe a bit of water logged roots also. Fertilisers are not what make plants grow. They are what we have been trained to think makes plants grow I never use fertilisers and get far better results for it. So what to do? Easy, rip it up again. Just grab it low on the stem and out it comes. If you can give it a soak in fresh water in a big bucket. Change the water a few times over a number of hours. One of those flexible trugs are cheap and ideal for the task Then soak it in a mild solution of molasses and water. A cup into the trugs water will do fine, then in goes the tree again. The extra water won't harm it. Then let it drain a bit. Where the tree is going to live needs to be renovated a bit. Think more about where the roots will be growing in the years to come. They will very quickly move outside a rich hole in the ground. You want a shallow but wide area of soil prepared. Use a few bags of certified organic compost Soil amendments like perlite, zeolite. Then dig that through to about at least 1m around where the tree will go. Dig it to 20-40cm deep. 40 is better but will be hard work. Worthwhile hard work. When you replant the tree you would be best to sit it lower then the surrounding soil level. make a well around it as you fill in the hole. A soft flow of water it excellent to have going as you fill it in. Or you can just firm the soil with your feet and give it a very good soak after. That gets the air pockets out from around the roots. If heaps of soil comes off while soaking the root ball, then best to water as you back fill. Plant no deeper than the top of the root ball. So in other words avoid having soil go up the stem. Mulch nice and generously with straw or better still do your whole garden with some mulch from your local tree lopper contractor Last, a dose of molasses diluted in water Yes the leaves are likely to all fall off. They will reshoot then drop for autumn very shortly after. Should get a vigorous flower show in spring due to it copping a hiding now. Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 11Mar 09, 2011 12:01 am Its going to be fantastic in years to come though Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 12Mar 09, 2011 8:28 am Fu, I need to read your response again to fully understand what I need to do! Thank you so much. The leaves on the tree have ALL turned brown and fallen off, it is too late to save it? Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 13Mar 09, 2011 9:42 am Ok now that I've had a moment to read the post a few times, I'm starting to understand There are a few questions I have which I hope Fu or someone else can clarify: Fu Manchu If you can give it a soak in fresh water in a big bucket. Change the water a few times over a number of hours. One of those flexible trugs are cheap and ideal for the task Then soak it in a mild solution of molasses and water. A cup into the trugs water will do fine, then in goes the tree again. The extra water won't harm it. When I first take the tree out of the ground and soak it in a bucket of water, how long do I have to do this for? When can I add the molasses and how long does the tree have to sit in the molasses and water solution for? Fu Manchu Then let it drain a bit. When I take the tree out of the bucket, how long do I let it drain for? Fu Manchu They will very quickly move outside a rich hole in the ground. You want a shallow but wide area of soil prepared. Dig it to 20-40cm deep. 40 is better but will be hard work. Worthwhile hard work. This is going to be the hardest part. The tree is planted in the middle of my new lawn. The lawn was only layed about 2 weeks ago. Here is a picture Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ How do I go about digging 1 metre around the treet when there is turf there? Would I just have to dig the turf out to save my tree? Also, how much of organic compost, perlite and zeolite do i put in the whole? I dont want to overdo it again and burn the roots again!! Fu Manchu A soft flow of water it excellent to have going as you fill it in. Or you can just firm the soil with your feet and give it a very good soak after. That gets the air pockets out from around the roots. If heaps of soil comes off while soaking the root ball, then best to water as you back fill. I'm not sure how good my drainage is under the soil. Someone told me to put a stick into the soil around the tree and if the soil sticks to the stick, they I have bad drainage. We did that and the soil seemed abit moist, does that mean our soil is too wet for the tree? If I put alot of water while back filling the roots, will that make it more water logged? Mulch nice and generously with straw or better still do your whole garden with some mulch from your local tree lopper contractor Fu Manchu Last, a dose of molasses diluted in water Sorry to ask but how much is a dose? I'm so scared of overdoing anything now! Fu Manchu Yes the leaves are likely to all fall off. They will reshoot then drop for autumn very shortly after. Should get a vigorous flower show in spring due to it copping a hiding now. Thank you SO much Fu for your instructions. I hope to do this over the weekend. I pray that it will come back alive. At the moment, the tree is completely brown, all the leaves have turned brown and half of it has already fallen off the tree! Everytime I walk past it, I feel quite depressed. Hopefully this will do the trip Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 14Mar 09, 2011 10:16 am You will need at least a meter round the tree anyway. Having turf that close will mean it forever out competes with the tree for water and nutrients Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 15Mar 09, 2011 10:17 am A dose is 1 or 2 cups into the water. Maybe 1 will do Re: Please help rescue my weeping cherry!!! 16Mar 09, 2011 11:07 am Thanks Fu! How about the first question about the water and the molasses? Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7140 i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits.
