Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 27, 2011 5:07 pm Ok, so we have finished the fencing now and ready to tackle the gardens. i will show you some pics so you get the idea of what we are working with This is taking from the driveway looking left(btw - rails are now black too) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ and to the right Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We want some sort of screening plant across the front - but not high maintenance - something like a dwarf lilypily - we would prefer a native Advice? Also behind the post and rail entry we are going to put in a triangular garden (same both side) i wanted to have something growing under the bottom rail and follow that through up the driveway - perhaps purple mountain grass or agapanthas (?) then in the middle of each garden i was after a ornament tree - not huge or anything maybe 2-3m with soft leaves what could you recommend? Also we would like to put something like sheenas gold in there too - something with soft green leaves - but doesnt require trimming. Any ideas? We will follow the same suit in our round garden in the front yard. (have it 3 tier eg ornament tree in the middle, followed by something similar to sheenas gold in the middle with agapathas or mountain grass in the front. Also, so i dont bug H1 for advice all the time, is there a gardening website that anyone can recommend. Could be worth scetching it out on the computer. or paper jsut to give you an idea. We've broken our place up into sections and are working on one section at a time. And ours is only 3/4 of an acre. Although we have general overall plan. it was the only way financially and practically we figured we could manage to get it all established. BTW 2m for a tree? Fu would say that's a pruned shrub. trees usually start over 3m or so Are you willing to prune? you could go for a non native along the fencing like olives and just keep them pruned low. Bonus Olives! if you plant the eating kind. OIl olives are really bitter. Re: Need help planning my gardens - i have 5 acres to garden 3Feb 27, 2011 7:23 pm I never thought of olives. ill go and research now. Yeah a couple times a year is ok with the pruning but not marayas/buxus or anything like those hedges. i dont want a formal garden 'look' Our Acreage Build The Lakeview Lodge - Beechwood Homes 01/04/10 YES 2010 - Deposit paid 23/09 - PCI CANCELLED 28/09 - PCI - will it happen.-18 months later 07/10/11 - ITS OURS..WOOHOO Re: Need help planning my gardens - i have 5 acres to garden 4Feb 27, 2011 7:32 pm i have a work friend who has olives ( the oil kind) I was part of the olive picking party last year. we all learnt the hard way that it is better/more efficient to have them pruned so you don't waste time having to climb ladders/ climb the trees to collect the harvest. Also With oil olives you have to know someone with a press and it can be exxy to get them pressed. Luckily someone else I work with has a press. hence my suggestion for eating olives not oil olives. Re: Need help planning my gardens - i have 5 acres to garden 5Mar 02, 2011 3:01 pm it can be hard to know where to start on acreage, we have 5 acres and also have no idea where to start either , we have planted a few trees and fruit trees and have a couple of gardens so will watch this post for ideas finished building 40 square home on 5 acres with perry homes.working on the landscaping just finished pool deck with ://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2217 Re: Need help planning my gardens - i have 5 acres to garden 7Mar 02, 2011 9:57 pm hedge-i have bought some grevillea winpara gems to alternate with grevillea ned kellys and anther grevillea I can't think of the name of right now. haven't planted them yet. its a long weekend coming up. I'm going to try to do it this weekend if the weather isn't too hot. Re: Need help planning my gardens - i have 5 acres to garden 8Mar 03, 2011 2:08 pm Sounds like a start, I have had a few big gardens and the key word is repetition. There is no point planting just one of each type of plant, put plants in big drifts. Agapanthus look great in drifts. I use bottle brushes, agapanthus, purple fountain grasses, blue gums and prunus nigra (purple leaved ornamental plum - very hardy) as main plantings and lots of them. They are my hard to kill favourites. Plan to put in some fruit trees somewhere, they don't have to be in a group (orchard) they make great ornamentals. Your fence looks great Lisa Re: Need help planning my gardens - i have 5 acres to garden 9Mar 03, 2011 3:15 pm Thanks Lisa Dont worry - lots of fruit tress are going in. I dont plan on buying any fruit, veges or eggs once we get out there and everything is established. Do natives have to built on a mound for irrigation? We are thinking to stick with the full grown lily pily, across the front, then purple mountain grass to cover the mound. Around the entry, we will continue with the purple fountain grass and follow up the driveway to the garage/house. Im going to stop the lily pily just at the start of the first top rail of the front entry. Im still after a ornament plant. What can everyone suggest? In front of the water tanks (which can be seen from the road) we are going to put up timber privacy screens with maybe wattles/banksia or something like that in front for alittle colour Im going to either follow the purple mountain grass along the front verandah or maybe agapanthas with something else (not sure yet) In the front round garden i will follow suite and have purple mountain grass and what every i choose as the ornament plants for the front gates i will also have in the middle of the round garden (im also cosidering a fountain or statue) So this weekend we are starting the mound(if one is needed) and the beds for the vege gardens.
