Most of it was removed from my land upon subdivision, but I still get the occasional plant, just have to be vigilant and get them before they flower!!! Also ruining parts of the Victorian High COunrty that I love Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes. We were a little slack in tackling them last year and now we are suffering the consequences. Built with New Generation (Summit Homes) We own land!... with a slab on it! Plus a shell of a house with stuff inside ! Re: What plants really drive you mad? 10Feb 24, 2011 3:57 pm kb46 Nutgrass! Ditto, they call it nutgrass because it drives you nuts.... Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: What plants really drive you mad? 11Feb 25, 2011 9:10 am I hate that we put in some wonderful turf before we got rid of the existing house and started to build. The turf was doing great until the builders dug up a trench through the middle of it to find the sewerline. Now the nutgrass has taken over - there wasn't even any nutgrass there before! Once we move in I will tackle it but it is going to be a royal PITA as Roundup is the only cure I know and that will also hurt the turf!
Love that I spent ages typing kb46 and you just yelled out 'Nutgrass!'
Sorry, it just sprang straight to mind, but obviously I didn't read the OP properly as I didn't answer the questions! Yours is a much better post! I'm with Shane on the palm trees too - although I will be more specific - it is the golden canes I hate for dropping their fronds, and some others I hate because of the berries they drop - but palms are tropical and relaxing to look at. I guess it's just a matter of keeping the balance - put in no more than you have time to maintain! Oh yes, and I really hate the neighbours' coconut palms because they hang over our side of the fence and drop their coconuts on our driveway. Yet, the tree loppers tell us we can't cut the part on our side of the fence because that would cause the tree to die and it is our neighbours' property so we aren't allowed to kill it. The owners live 1000kms away and aren't open to doing anything about it. Definitely something I plan to take up with the council once we move into our house - I'm thinking I can probably get a win using the safety angle. Re: What plants really drive you mad? 12Feb 25, 2011 11:47 am It looks so pretty too Richo - typical If it's a weed in your area, you could report the 'infestation' to the council and they will either force the landowner to treat it, or do it themselves. We've got some nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus - so it's actually a sedge!) though only a tiny little bit at the moment in comparison to yours. I'm going to dig it and the dock plants out today, as I'm out doing another oxalis check. mine isn't a better post - it's just that I'm a stay at home mum who needs to feel like her brain still works!! (it doesn't) As for the coconut palms, that's a pain but you get free fruit... Re: What plants really drive you mad? 16Feb 25, 2011 9:04 pm After reading the comments - I realise that I probably clicked on this thread for the wrong reasons. What plant drives me mad - because I have failed over and over to grow them Hydrangers(?) - I see them florish in rentals with NO attention. I do the 'lime'thing - the south side of the house thing - the water thing. They always die! grrrrrrr! they are my favourite flower and I can not seem to get a good plant. I am DETERMINED to grow them on the south side of my new house! Any tips? Hydrangeas - when I was little, there were some in the front garden in Scotland. They were got back quite hard when young (no flowers again till following year) and pruned regularly to stop them from getting leggy. Other than that, they were ignored!!! South facing and obviously cold, lots of rain and snow in winter with regular frosts. Perhaps you need to neglect them more Sheznay? Re: What plants really drive you mad? 18Feb 26, 2011 4:11 pm yes - I am thinking so. I can grown them in pots ok - but as soon as I transplant them - they die. I think this summer in perth was probably too dry for anything. neglect I will! lol Building with Life$tyle Homes in Perth SOR Key Dates on First Page of my Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=38761 Re: What plants really drive you mad? 19Feb 27, 2011 1:32 pm Maybe it's where you're putting them? They're woodland plants, so prefer lots of organic matter. Also, the roots are at the surface and the plant doesn't like to dry out, so mulch is definitely needed. In the UK these were used as shade plants, but would grow just as happily in full sun. This was because they didn't have to worry about hot furnace like winds and strong Australian sun! Hot north winds and direct hot sun are not appreciated - partial sun is preferred I think (so, morning sun and afternoon shade would be good), though they will grow on south facing sites in full shade too (there's some growing in Sassafras in this situation, but they don't flower as profusely). So, partial shade or morning sun only, lots of organic matter, mulch, mulch, mulch and chuck them a bucket of water a week when it's dry (not literally as it knocks the petals off the flowers!). When you have them in pots, the roots are getting some protection from drying out and you probably water them fairly regularly, so maybe that's why you're more sucessful then? Funny, I never liked hydrangeas when I was young but they're super popular in Australia it seems and are starting to grow on me! Re: What plants really drive you mad? 20Mar 02, 2011 3:34 pm Grass- just spreading everywhere! It seems to be a never ending weeding job.
