Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 17, 2011 7:19 pm Hi all, Just moved into a new house, the neighbour behind us looks directly into our backyard and meals areas. I'd like to plant some trees that border the the rear and sides of our house. I'd like to plant them along the fenceline. My criteria is: -3 meters heigh -no thick roots that destroy pipes etc -doesnt loose/dump leaves continuously throughout the year - something that is dense I really like the look of leighton green, however have been reading some bad things about it. Can you guys see it being a problem if I keep it trimmed at 3m? Does it meet my criteria above? Given that I like the look of the leighton green, I guess that I should keep looking at conifers? I'd really like to hear your suggestions, the first thing I want to do is *** off the neighbours if leighton green is going to be a problem Re: Help me find an alternative to Leighton Greens 2Feb 17, 2011 7:31 pm They are tall growers I have then across my front [80ft ] in 22 years I have trimed then at least 6 times.I have them at 5m.They are beautiful if you keep them clipped should be ok. Avoid them as well as the other false cypress, as they will be hit with cypress canker and look crap. http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&c ... 4&aql=&oq= Check these out http://www.google.com.au/search?client= ... gle+Search Re: Help me find an alternative to Leighton Greens 4Feb 17, 2011 9:43 pm Thanks for the replies! Jetson, thanks for pointing out the conifer canker, we had an old conifer at our old house which died off and now know why! I have had a look at spartan juniper, is this a real conifer (will it be susceptible to canker?) Does it grow reasonably quick?? Re: Help me find an alternative to Leighton Greens 5Feb 17, 2011 11:43 pm Melaleuca nesophilla. No competition there. The leightons green won't meet your criteria Also pretty risky, although as mentioned some can pull it off. Murraya will do the job. Callistemon of many types will do the job. Vibernums will do the job. As for dense foliage, well read the hedging and topiary threads . Its all about clipping, not about the species or variety of plant chosen. I had heaps affected, was such a pain as I had been looking after various conifers for years without a problem then they all stated showing signs of the canker to various degrees so I had to get rid of them. Junipers are real conifers and I have yet too see one affected even when growing underneath sick trees for years. I don't think they are on the cankers hit list. Yep they do grow pretty fast too. Thanks will have a look into them. I have been reading a few screening threads on these forums, and have noticed that you do not recommend conifers that much. Is this because people let them get out of control and grow 10m+ etc? Because of canker? I am really leaning towards the conifers and would be interested in finding out their cons Re: Help me find an alternative to Leighton Greens 8Feb 18, 2011 5:44 pm As I said mine are beautiful, maybe climate affect then.If I can get a pic I wil put on H1. Help me find an alternative to Leighton Greens 9Feb 19, 2011 12:22 am Then go ahead and use conifers. All the rage again in Europe.
