Thanks Re: Is it to late to plant out sweet potato in Melbourne? 2Feb 15, 2011 12:36 am They are fantastic. I think you may as well sneak a go at it. It;'s not like they are expensive or hard to grow Onc or Lisanne should have a moon planting guide that will outline when this month is good for planting root veggies. if it doesn't work out, try next spring when the soil warms up Re: Is it to late to plant out sweet potato in Melbourne? 3Feb 15, 2011 1:36 am It usually takes a while for them to get to a decent size and they are like mint. Make sure you keep it in a plot that you will keep as sweet potato and that the runners won't cross into another bed. They grow from the smallest bit of root so be sure of where you're planting it! Re: Is it to late to plant out sweet potato in Melbourne? 4Feb 15, 2011 1:42 am Actually I can tell you now! Best time is from 8.30pm on the 22nd until the 24th at 11.48pm. Next best time is before that - 8.02pm on the 20th until the 22nd at 8.30pm. Even the concrete loving Italians think it's stupid that people don't plant by the moon! Re: Is it to late to plant out sweet potato in Melbourne? 5Feb 15, 2011 9:14 am Oh, I thought that the best time for planting root veg was in the full moon phase? That would be 12 hours after the full moon, which is on the 18th, so would that be sometime on the 19th? I've only done some basic reading on the moon phases, so still not sure I understand it. Re: Is it to late to plant out sweet potato in Melbourne? 6Feb 27, 2011 7:40 pm I'm just going by our moon phase calendar and it has worked for our vegies so far. Re: Is it to late to plant out sweet potato in Melbourne? 7Feb 28, 2011 1:09 pm Thanks Gone Ducky I still haven't gotten my head round the whole moon phase thing yet. I've tried to look it up online, but it gets a little wooly and confusing - I like solid info that I can then cross reference! Still a bit wary of planting the sweet potato out, but it's now got lots of shoots. I'm conscious of the fact that it might take over Re: Is it to late to plant out sweet potato in Melbourne? 8Mar 01, 2011 12:17 pm Are you just planting a sweet potato which has just started growing shoots? Do you grow sweet potatoes the same as normal potatoes? I had about a dozen potatoes that started growing shoots. I buried them in soil and now have 30cm high plants. Built The Huntley 290 with HomeXcellance / Cheviot Homes Re: Is it to late to plant out sweet potato in Melbourne? 9Mar 01, 2011 12:37 pm Apparently yes. They grow shoots from their 'eyes', you cut that shoot out (with the bit of potato attached) then plant it. The rest of the potato will keep growing shoots. Mine is just sitting on the kitchen counter growing away - no assistance from me They are vines with underground tubers though, so will either creep all over the ground or climb. They will grow from the tubers, cuttings, or root themselves. Means that they can get invasive and it's tricky to find the potatoes! I'm trying to find the right spot for them to give it a go. Will probably plant it in a big pot until I've got somewhere ready that I can keep it under control. Like I said the Occupancy Certificate is not the tollgate that marks the completion of the house.
