There are now more and more gum-tree like shrubs scattered around. Some are nearly 2M tall, multi-trucked and I am unsure if those were the same as what i found in the garden. I don't think they were planted because they grew just beside the footpath, and starting to block the passage. Any idea of what that is? thanks. Re: Weed or not? 3Feb 11, 2011 9:11 am They do look like red river gum (E. camaldulensis), but I'm no expert. I've just been reading about them because I thought we might have one in the front garden, but turns out I don't! The red river gum produces loads of seeds and you can get thick stands of seedlings when it's been raining heavily, particularly after flooding (the seeds need lots of water so that they don't dry out). I suspect that the recent high winds blew some your way, and the rains have kept the seed nice and moist. They also need lots of sun to germinate and sprout, so the occassional few days of sun we've had recently probably filled the last of the requirements to sprout. They can grow to around 12m within a few years apparently, so you could transplant them to a better place if you want to try and keep them. They can grow to around 30m though, so you might want to consider the placement carefully. Much of the Melbourne area and the Murray-Darling basin was likely covered with these trees once upon a time. Great way to get plants - if you know what they are! I do agree they grow very fast. Those spots with those " shrubs" in the reserves look very bare when we move in. Now, in less than 2 years, the shrubs" already is two metres tall. If they are really river red gums, I think they can't stay in my garden. They are way too huge. They did look very nice, though. Weed or not? 7Feb 20, 2011 11:38 pm Pulling young plants will rip off most of the fine feeder roots. Better to dig them gently with a trowel. Pot up in a 200mm pot and once established a little better, donate to your local school or just go plant them somewhere.
