Anyone know what I should be paying for gal 'H' and Gal 'C' to fit 75mm concrete sleepers?
And where to get them?

I would have thought that the concrete sleepers would have been the expensive part! Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes. Someone else mentioned that you can get them from Bunnings but questioned the quality. I have no idea how it may even lack in quality (Not galvanised properly, not strong enough ?) but for me it's either going to last > 30 Years or it's not the right stuff. FYI, a retailer told me that I can expect to pay about $80 per lineal meter for Gal 'H'. So for my wall, the cost of the uprights is about the same as the concrete sleepers. Expensive little b@aterd$ eh? Cheers, HC Re: H and C gal metal for retaining wall - *that* expensive? 4Feb 09, 2011 11:56 am checkout wonder walls system instead. gal steel will rust eventually especially if you cut or grind it. wonder walls used gal steel as re-enforcing inside concrete sleepers and posts. will last a lot longer, has engineering specs and can be installed DIY. Re: H and C gal metal for retaining wall - *that* expensive? 5Feb 09, 2011 12:23 pm Plenty of steel retailers will sell it. What they are selling is actually BHP Universal steel column (100UC) and Parallel flange channel (100PFC) which is used in many industries so it is readily available from just about anyone that sells steel to the public. It is expensive but I honestly don't think you ever need to worry about it rusting - just use a zinch rich paint on the cut ends. $80 per linear metre sounds about right - don't buy it from Bunnings as they only sell specific lengths and will not cut to suit. Re: H and C gal metal for retaining wall - *that* expensive? 6Feb 09, 2011 12:45 pm Cool. Thanks guys. Mozzie, I have to ask about the bunning thing - so the size is the only reason I wouldn't buy from there? What if the lengths they produce happened to suit my wall. Then is the Bunning stuff ok? Cheers, HC Re: H and C gal metal for retaining wall - *that* expensive? 7Feb 09, 2011 1:34 pm I'm paying $50-55 per meter for gal 100UC. Depends on how much is required and when the suppliers price break cuts in. try these guys, I got a similar quote from them when I was going to DIY it http://www.robotbuildingsupplies.com.au ... php?id=154 Re: H and C gal metal for retaining wall - *that* expensive? 8Feb 09, 2011 3:59 pm heat_crime, I would think the stuff from Bunnings is okay. I've seen it and from memory it just looks like regular BHP section and I'd say it's highly unlikely that it's sourced from overseas or of any different quality/grade. The galvanizing looked okay to me... If you can find it in the right lengths then you may decide the convenience of not having to shop around is worth paying the extra. Re: H and C gal metal for retaining wall - *that* expensive? 9Feb 09, 2011 4:23 pm Thank Mozzie. Thanks all. Great helpful info. Cheers, HC Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
