Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 04, 2011 1:13 pm I have a north facing wall which I have trained a creeper (not sure of its name) but think its a type of jasmanoide (has no perfume). Anyway, I'm not happy with the look after 2 years of growing. Has grown quiet vigorously and now looks untidy. Has some large woody stalks. As this section is semi formal (has camellias, magnolias, azaleas etc) I'm wanting something that will look neat and tidy. Has to be reasonably hardy due to the north facing wall. I'm in northern NSW so have a great climate. I know camelias make great espaliers - but I also know they are extremely slow growing . I'm probably wanting the impossible - neat/compact growth habit with reasonably fast growth rate. Cant be jasmine etc as hubby highly allergic. Happy for it to flower, however it doesnt have to. Dont want anything weedy eg. ivy. Not keen on the mandavilla either. I do like them - but not sure???? Hi Gardenlover, all Citrus trees make terrific Espaliers and also Magnolias, and the Crab Apple also works very well. Topiarius Re: Looking for a great espalier plant 3Feb 08, 2011 9:31 am Fruit trees for definite. It's something that was done in Europe a lot in the past, and I think is now having a bit of a resurgance. The trees often blossom earlier and grow better fruit because of the heat radiating back from the wall. Perhaps not so important in northern NSW, but it certainly was in the UK! Prunus sp. are a good one if you want some soft fruit, or an almond, but as Topiarius says, citrus are terrific. Crab apple would like very nice, but something I would love to espalier (because I've enough large trees already) is Magnolia Grandiflora. I've always wanted this plant in my garden! They look great as espaliers, specimen trees, being trimmed into a conical shape or when used as hedging. They grow about 30cm a year in height and are pretty hardy, but I think they need a little extra work to espalier than a citrus would. I haven't done any espalier yet though, just planning!! We need to replace the rear fence first, so I have lots of time to consider what I could plant Oh, just wiki'd espalier out of interest whilst I was typing this to see what it said about the M. grandiflora, and it has a list down the bottom of suggested plants to espalier. Might be worth a quick look Re: Looking for a great espalier plant 4Feb 09, 2011 11:13 am I'm considering lemon tree. Does anyone know how fast/slow they grow. I can think of so many ways to use the lemons and preserve the remaining.........I'm actually excited about the thought. Re: Looking for a great espalier plant 5Feb 09, 2011 11:33 am We've bought a blood orange, bay leaf, tahitian lime, naval orange, and meyer lemon to espalier. At the moment they're in pots, and have been for 4 months or so, they've all grown considerably since we bought them. Looking for a great espalier plant 6Feb 09, 2011 11:39 am Busy now but if you do a search there are a few threads on this and with photos. 0 4711 Really tight at the top of the stairs- how to get furniture into those rooms? Study books - does anyone really use them these days? Large storage closet would be more functional. 2 6890 Hi, I am looking into doing a KDR in Melbourne and am contemplating using Kialla Homes. I am looking for feedback on them from others who have built with them. 0 13447 |
