Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 30, 2011 5:18 pm I've got no idea about gardening our builder excavated too much dirt so now there is a large area that we would like to build up - does that make sense??? so when you step down from our alfresco area you plunge down about a metre - we'll be putting in steps but dont want such a far down drop. As we will be paving this area with concrete pavers I want to know is there some type of cheap material/product/dirt that we can use to slightly raise our ground level. Anyone know? Scurry rocks?? just plain dirt?? thanks. Re: is there such a thing?? cheap dirt to raise level?? 2Jan 30, 2011 5:24 pm Clean fill, not sure where you can get .We got some when the roads were done up from us.I have seen people with signs outside their place asking for clean fill[just a thought Free] Re: is there such a thing?? cheap dirt to raise level?? 3Jan 30, 2011 5:41 pm The trouble with cheap fill is that it can settle unevenly which is going to be a major problem if you are going to be laying pavers on it. You probably need something like roadbase. Regardless of the material you fill the hole with you need to lay it in typically 150-200mm layers and use one of those vibrating plate compactors to make sure it each layer is hard before spreading the next. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: is there such a thing?? cheap dirt to raise level?? 5Jan 30, 2011 7:27 pm I'd try ringing a local bobcat/cartage company. Quite often they have customers that want to remove fill and if they have someone that wants it then they may just give it to you for nothing or a very small fee. I have a huge pile of sand you're welcome to Clean fill is just sand that doesn't contain any rubbish, bricks, branches etc. You might find some on gumtree.
