Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 29, 2011 10:57 pm Hi We had a contractor retain 1m High x 30m along the side of our house. He didn't use plastic sheeting behind the wall, telling us (read, "insisting") it was unnecessary. And actually a guy at the local hardware store said the same so we figured he may have been right. Since then we've noticed everyone in our estate has plastic sheeting behind their retaining walls... Is he correct in saying that it isn't needed? During winter we had so much water pouring out through the gaps in the concrete sleepers. Furious that he is most likely wrong and there's now nothing we can do to fix it. Digging out behind the retaining wall to install plastic is out of the question. Could we somehow "seal" it externally? In the meantime we've had to put in ag pipe wrapped in geo-fabric along the wall, plus pebbles on top, to help with drainage issues. Extra expense that may have been spared if we had the plastic sheeting? Re: Retaining wall with no plastic sheeting - incorrect? 2Jan 30, 2011 7:40 am You should have good drainage either through the wall or behind the wall as you shouldn't let water build up behind the wall. Up to now its probably been the same cost for the ag pipe and stone. If the wall is fairly new the soil may well consolidate and shed more water than soaks through to come out the face. Re: Retaining wall with no plastic sheeting - incorrect? 3Jan 30, 2011 9:21 am The wall should have been 'parged'. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Thanks. Yeh ideally that would have been good, but have progressed too far now. Hoping some well placed internal walls fixed up into the battens will provide some… 2 5371 Constant What you have posted isn't really readable and also needs to be compared to your architectural plans.
