Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 28, 2011 5:51 pm Hi I have a shale/clay rock wall (bank) at the end of my garden. On top of this rock is a very hard soil with lots of small rocks in it. I have recently put some plants in the soil, however when it rains, or I try and water, the water just runs off the top taking bits of the soil with it (so I am left with more stones than soil). This soil and sludge just runs off the rock and I am not sure how much water the plants are getting. One of the problems is the rock bank has a slight natural slope forward, which assists in the soil running off. Is there any way I can improve the soil? Should I be taking out as many stones as possible and topping up with new soil? Any help or suggestions appreciated.
