Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 28, 2011 4:39 pm HI all, We need a few retaining walls on our sloping block, but it's all function and no fashion. This part of the yard won't be used or seen that much so I'd much rather throw money towards areas that will be seen so it doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. So the question, the cheapest way to get a retaining wall up and running? We have quite a few house bricks laying around, but to build an effective wall with house bricks (as I understand it) we need a good concrete base, not to mention a brick layer which I 'aint! Also for our sloping block we're really looking at two or three 400mm walls (as opposed to a single 1.2M) so that means two or three concrete footings $$$. I don't think this is the way. Treated pine sleepers? Any help appreciated. Cheers, HC Re: Retaining wall - cheapest method 2Jan 28, 2011 5:21 pm The cheapest and also very stable would be a rock armoured batter with rockery plants growing on it. Use a 1:1.5 rise:run grade or flatter. You could do 3 small ones or one big one. You lose a bit of space but in reality only 1.8m for a 1.2m step, and all retaining walls occupy some room. Alternatively the wonder walls system is strong and reasonably priced, DIY available. Not the greatest look but long lasting and engineered. Re: Retaining wall - cheapest method 3Jan 28, 2011 6:01 pm Thanks for that. The access to the back of the block to shocking. This is why it hasn't been developed since it was built I imagine. So, for me to get big boulders up there is going to be difficult. The theory was to use what is in the back yard and keep it in the back yard, 'cause anything that goes in or out of the property is my poor back I'll have a look into the wonder walls system. Thanks again. HC Re: Retaining wall - cheapest method 5Jan 28, 2011 10:53 pm I have battered rock walls about 1.2 high, as keen said they are very stable. I extended a few more walls and it is heavy work but it's so simple and you won't have any drainage issues or footings to worry about. A few ground covers and you are away, it also doubles as a rock climbing wall for the kids . Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5196 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16157 Hi All, I engaged a tradie to install concrete retaining wall 600-800mm high over 32 meters in Victoria. Sleepers are 200*75*2000 mm installed over 17 steel posts. I… 0 6917 |
