Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 20, 2011 11:57 am Hi everyone, I'm in the process of planning my front landscape and there are a few plants which I want. However, I'm abit stumped at the moment about what to put in our little garden bed right in front of the house. I dont want anything that is too tall as I dont want it to block the light going into the house. But I want something which is red in colour. Can anyone recommend anything? thanks. Re: Please recommend a plant 4Jan 20, 2011 8:29 pm We have red flax grass at the front of our place (see thread). It only grows about 60cm. It sounds like it might be a bit strappy looking for what you want though... We also have black renegade cordylines on the side of the driveway. A lot of cordylines grow quite big and can pretty quickly make your garden look overcrowded. A short drive around any estate tells you that lots of people put them in without really checking how big their variety grows! But there are some that don't get toooo big. Check out 'red fountain' (only 80cm- 1m tall) and 'electric pink' (up to 1.2m tall). Or you might consider 'burgundy azalea'? This pic doesn't do them justice but will give you an idea Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ They look fantastic mass planted (in a border under a window etc) and are IMHO an excellent companion plant for a garden with a dark red Japanese maple in it. Very classy Re: Please recommend a plant 5Jan 20, 2011 8:31 pm Oh sorry I should have abit more info. The garden bed is about 3m long by 0.8m wide. I don't want anything too tall as I don't want the plant to block the windows too much. I probably prefer leafy plants to flowers etc. My garden doesn't really have a style or theme. I just put in plants that I like and are pretty haha! My front yard orientation is south to southwest Thanks but I don't really like the look of bottlebrush Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Please recommend a plant 6Jan 20, 2011 8:55 pm Thanks felistopher, some good recs there. I have seen alot of red flex in peoples front yard, and you are right, alot of them tend to overgrow and take over the whole garden. Your other suggestion is worth investigating. The image you linked wasn't a great pic of it but I will google it later. Thanks. I was also thinking of having a weeping cherry tree as the centerpiece of my garden, smack bang in the middle of my lawn. I was also thinking of the japanese maple as an alternative Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Please recommend a plant 7Jan 20, 2011 9:05 pm Re: Please recommend a plant 8Jan 21, 2011 9:22 am You're right, that pic wasn't very good. I found some more when I googled the proper name- 'little john' azalea. If you prefer foliage to flowers (I do too ) it's perfect as it rarely blooms. If you like bright red, kek's suggestion of nandina is a winner. Re: Please recommend a plant 9Jan 21, 2011 9:38 am That's really pretty, Fel... I haven't spotted those before. Might get a few for my Mum. Re: Please recommend a plant 10Jan 21, 2011 9:43 am They're an excellent mum and daughter plant They have them at Diamond Valley Garden Centre. The lady we had create a landscape plan for us works there, and she recommended them for both mine and my mum's garden! It's brought us closer Re: Please recommend a plant 11Jan 21, 2011 11:33 am Thanks everyone for your suggestion. kek, those nandinas are very pretty. But I must say, the 'little john' azalea which Felistopher is more my type. I love that its quite subtle but still has that nice red foliage. Do you know how high they would grow? Thanks. Re: Please recommend a plant 13Jan 21, 2011 12:51 pm 'Big red' roo paws, strappy leaf foliage and big red flowers which will give good height but not block out any light? Could add in the odd 'Yellow gem' (roo paw) as well. See http://www.zanthorrea.com/design/images/K-row-paws.jpg, you don't need to go as dense as that though. Good question... Not sure! Mum's have only been in her garden for a year and are only around 50cm high x 40cm spread. I am guessing they are just like other azaleas, in that they can be pruned/shaped/kept tidy/small and respond to this quite well. Maybe Fu can help??
