For shade? For nice flowers? Etc.....then I'm sure people will be able to suggest something! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: NATIVE 3Dec 10, 2007 8:57 am Firstly welcome to the forum.
What about checking with your local nurseries and council? The Council will usually have a handbook that might outline suggested plants. Also the local nurseries will know what will work - just get your soil ph etc checked so that you plant the right ones, in the right places. Good Luck Re: NATIVE 4Dec 10, 2007 9:03 am What area are you in?
There is a great native nursery down my way (South East) ... there are just so many plants to choose from, as Vanderlay said, get a plan in your head as to what you want to achieve and there will be a plant for that purpose. I love natives and have quite a few in the front garden (mixed with other stuff). Am planning on doing a large area in the backyard of natives. Good luck!! Re: NATIVE 5Dec 10, 2007 1:18 pm Hi there
Thank you Phoenix for the welcome message We live in Brisbane I have found a picture in a magazine of a rural native garden that I love. It has screening shrubs in the backyard. I think I best take the pic off to a nursery and maybe they can let me know what the plants are? We dont want any huge trees as were already have a few big gums on our block of land. It is just hard to know where to start. Re: NATIVE 6Dec 10, 2007 4:21 pm post scanned pic and someone should be able to identify some or all
also google aussie native plants in your area some sites have guides for planting etc Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Native plants in Brisbane 9Dec 12, 2007 6:46 pm Gday all,
Im just going to jump in of this topic for a sec: If you live in Brisbane you have so many plants to choose from its crazy. I own a landscaping business in Brisbane and we use native plants all the time. I used a large paper bark (melaleuca quinquenervia 150L bag) the other day with weeping red and green fountain grass around the base. Which brings me to another point, there are hundreds of native grasses in all shapes, sizes and textures. Most of the are around the $4 for a 140mm pot, cheap as chips. Have a look at the Tango holdings website for some ideas:www.tangoholdings.com.au/ . I dont suggest buying from Tango though as they are expensive. I also have some basic ideas on my website at www.solidthinking.com.au/ideas.php. If you need more specific plant names then dont be shy to send me an email. cheers, John Re: NATIVE 10Dec 19, 2007 2:29 pm Hey we are in Brisbane too and I'm trying out some Cabernett Cordylines for their waterwiseness and some native frangipannis. Dont forget that because you have just moved in (if you are in the brisbane council) you get 4 free plants plus 2 free a year on presentation of your rates notice. Thats 6 free plants when you move in!!
Thanks for the pointers Solid Thinking - i'll be logging on to your website asap. Just build it the way I want and everything will be okay. Re: NATIVE 11Mar 11, 2008 5:03 am John
Tango do PBR native grasses so they will be a bit more expensive than your common everyday standard species.....I actually work for landscaping firm that deals a lot with Tango and they are actually a lot cheaper for these types of varieties than other nurseries that grow them (the cost is related to the licencing & royalties system). Calliejane Re: NATIVE 12Apr 06, 2008 2:18 am Try to get to the Kumbartcho Native Nursery in Brisbane's north (http://www.kumbartcho.org.au/nursery.php).
Awesome resource for indigneous species and very knowledgable staff. Open Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays and really cheap!!! Re: NATIVE 13Apr 10, 2008 8:06 am I love Australian Natives... I've planted over 100 natives on my 607m2 suburban block.
Be willing to try anything, and if things don't work, cut them out, start again! Try Greening Australia, it's run by volunteers, and tubestock is around $2 each... Another nursery in Brisbane is Gumbarcho at Everton Hills. Similar to Greening Australia. Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!!
