Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 16, 2011 7:12 pm We're just starting to look at turf varieties for our new build. We need about 72 sq m for the back garden (north facing) and 60 sq m for the front garden (south facing). We went and looked at varieties and we really like the Zoysias...the Empress is our favorite for the back garden...we're not sure what to do about the front garden...Sapphire Buffalo was a possibility. At the very least, something non-invasive...we've been pulling Winter Green out of the beds of the house we're renting for the past 18 months. And of course, the landscape package for the front only offers Winter Green, so that'll be an automatic upgrade for us. I was wondering... Is Empress basically the exact same as Empire Zoysia, just with smaller leaf blades? Does it have the same low fertilizer requirements, low mowing requirements, resistance to insects and disease (as Empire is advertised...I know a healthy lawn comes from good prep and following Fu's tips). What would you suggest for a south facing front garden? And yes, proper prep is a given...we've been reading Fu's threads and making our to do list... Thanks in advance... Re: Empire/Empress Zoysia and advice re:a shade tolerant buf 2Jan 22, 2011 1:42 am Empress grows much more vigorously than EZ. A bit too couch like for my liking. I'd go a buffalo out front. It doesn't matter which one. They are all so much the same in the real world it isn't funny. Then start blending your EZ and Buffalo to get the best lawn you can Re: Empire/Empress Zoysia and advice re:a shade tolerant buf 4Jan 22, 2011 12:25 pm Wonder if empress works down here then being more vigorous it would be handy in the transitional months as it would be more active than EZ. It would then hopefully repair quicker after been damaged in winter while dormant and be greener in late autumn. What u reckon Fu? Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing. If you just do a 400x200 footing it will fail in time.
