I know there is a million and one posts about mulch, and, having read through approximately 9,999,999 of them, I've come to the conclusion that the number one choice for mulch should be fresh tree/shrub trimmings (lots of different sized pieces and is the closest we can get to the natural situation outside our gardens).
What I was wondering is, what would be the next best out of peastraw, sugarcane and lucerne mulches? All of these are available in my local Bunnings, at around $15 to cover an 8msq area to around 5cm depth.
So, I know that sugarcane mulch is a by-product of the sugarcane industry, but I'm not really sure how? Where do the others come from? What are the differences and benefits of each?
Also, should all of these be applied to wet soil and then hosed down to ensure that they don't blow round etc? Do they all break down and need topping up at similar rates?
Sure I'll think of something else, but these are what I came up with whilst wandering round Bunnings trying to write on my soggy notepad
Thanks!
