Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 11, 2011 8:43 pm Forgive me if this might seem like a stupid question, but I'm wondering if it's not ok to do this on your naturestrip? We have just seeded the dirt patch out front and intended to bang in some stakes and run string (with little bits of material/flags so it's visible) around the perimeter of our naturestrip tomorrow. Tonight though, my brother told me he only just yesterday did the same to his lawn and today arrived home to find that someone had ripped out 4 of his stakes, snapped the other one off as it was too deeply embedded in the ground... and taken away the stakes and rope. Then they've driven their car over the length of the naturestrip, right up near where the tree in the middle is planted We can't work out if perhaps the council has come along and done this because it's against the rules to 'temp fence' off your naturestrip like this, or if a local has done it because they think it's against the rules, or if someone just wanted the stakes and rope (why the tyre tracks then??), or if it's just the work of some loser. So I just wanted to check before we do ours, is it against any rules to put up the stakes and string??? Is there any reason someone would do this??? Re: Is it ok to put stakes around your lawn?? 2Jan 11, 2011 9:08 pm Most council have rules about what can be done with the nature strip. if you follow the attached link you will see what they are. http://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/aboutwynd ... aturestrip Your council will probably have something similar so its worth asking. As for your brothers problem it seems to me that one of his neighbours is an a**ehole The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Is it ok to put stakes around your lawn?? 3Jan 11, 2011 9:20 pm I dont see a problem with it, you're just protecting the area until the grass is established. I'd say some low life has attempted to vandal your brothers nature strip Re: Is it ok to put stakes around your lawn?? 4Jan 11, 2011 9:42 pm Thanks bashworth! That was really helpful. Although I couldn't find a similar document for our council, the wyndham one you gave me the link to says that it's ok to use wooden stakes but not star pickets (something about their capacity to conduct electricity ) Another section in there encourages the use of "highly visible temporary fence" measures when you're doing any works on the naturestrip. Vandalism was my first thought too erin... but then we decided maybe the council thought it was inappropriate. Nothing's unbelievable these days. On a completely unrelated topic, did you know in Plenty River Estate the developer went and moved people's fences? Apparently some people had built their side gates/fences too far up the side of the house (i.e. were set further forward than stipulated) and they came home to find new posts concreted in and some of their backyard plants now in their front yards. So it wouldn't suprise me if this was the work of someone 'legit' Re: Is it ok to put stakes around your lawn?? 5Jan 11, 2011 9:49 pm ^ Oh my One of our neighbours had stakes up around their lawn and they were never pulled up on it by Council, and council have come out to our block a few times to make sure its neat etc Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Hopefully they stay there, otherwise I'll have to stage a stake-out to see who's doing this stuff Re: Is it ok to put stakes around your lawn?? 7Jan 12, 2011 9:13 am I would have thought the council would issue a warning first before physically doing something? I had no idea council workers actually did... work? Re: Is it ok to put stakes around your lawn?? 8Jan 12, 2011 11:38 am I've had different neighbours do this over the years with no problems - one in particular who didn't like the Postie's bike tracks, so staked off her lawn for extended periods of time! Re: Is it ok to put stakes around your lawn?? 9Jan 12, 2011 11:51 am just Erin I would have thought the council would issue a warning first before physically doing something? I had no idea council workers actually did... work? That was my thought too! I can't believe someone did that to your brothers place! It almost sounds like it was a tradie that just wanted to park there ?? I agree with Lisanne, I was thinking it may be a tradie who just decided all the other spots in the area he wanted to park were taken so he'd just make his own arrangements. Thanks for bringing this up, the house next to us is due to have tradies recommence any day now (framing just about to start) and we would like to start doing bits and pieces to the front garden (read - dustbowl ) and we thought at the very least we could do the nature strip with some seed lawn but now I'm not so sure if all our work would be 'undone' anyways... Good luck and keep us posted. We have a house in Doreen. Built the PD Kensington 24 (with Alfresco & Rumpus option). We are in...Decorating in progress...pics to come soon... I was hoping it was just done by the strong wind last night, but I'm told it was in tact at 6am this morning. Why do people hurt other people's stuff? I'm sure the lawn will still grow Re: Is it ok to put stakes around your lawn?? 15Jan 14, 2011 9:22 pm Oh my, that's ridiculous! Why would someone do that? I would think that if it was the Council they would warn first as Erin said. Either that or place a notice in your mailbox. I think it's stupid vandalism Gee whiz. Hope it gets sorted out. Could be a camping out and sneaking a peek at the culprit, I couldn't stand it, I would want to know.
