Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 10, 2011 1:42 pm I am not quite a complete beginner any more when it comes to reticulation but not far off We have 3 areas of lawn with MP rotator sprinklers. I just tested the water amounts yesterday with the fruit lids. After 40 minutes, the best I got was 3/4 full and the worst didn't even cover the bottom of the lid. No wonder my lawn is dying in patches. The sprinklers do cover the whole area. If we turn the pressure up they shoot right over the opposite side of the lawn. The worst driest spots are actually within 1.5m of a sprinkler head, it seems they're shooting too far and missing the close bits? even though there is some overlap from the next sprinkler. I don't want to turn the pressure down because it already takes so long! So, two questions, why does it need more than 40 minutes to deliver 10mm? And what do I do about dying patches right next to the sprinkler? Advice much appreciated Re: Not enough water from MP rotators 2Jan 10, 2011 2:19 pm The streams from the sprinklers should overlap each other, ie the stream from one sprinkler should water right up to the sprinkler opposite and vise versa. So it another sprinkler should actually be watering that bit. I installed MP rotators about 8 weeks ago and run them for 40 min and havent had a problem (mind you, I havent actually measured to see if they are providing a full 10ml drink). Re: Not enough water from MP rotators 4Jan 13, 2011 6:56 pm Oh dear. I'm looking to have retic done and thought these MP rotators were the 'beez neez' because they didn't waste water by misting too much. Not good if they don't have reliable coverage now.... Re: Not enough water from MP rotators 5Jan 13, 2011 8:16 pm mp rotors take longer to water than other sprinklers. because they don't waste water and are more efficient. Perhaps you don't have enough of them or enough water pressure. We couldn't have them here as we don't have enough water pressure for them to operate properly. And they needs less pressure than any other sort We had 2 retic mobs come and tell us we had plenty of pressure because everyone "always" has. . Then one came and tested it properly and we were warned it wasn't enough. Re: Not enough water from MP rotators 6Jan 14, 2011 10:48 am Actually I think I have too much water pressure... going to have a play around with them and a look at the pressure reducing valve thingy on the weekend. On further investigation I have at least 2x pathetic probably partially blocked heads and 1x arc needing readjustment. I didn't realise you could adjust down their throw until I did some googling and will give that a try. I think they may not be ideal for my small 3m wide area. Watercorp site or something notes they will take around 40min, so that part's OK, just wish I'd known that to start with when my lawn was dying just after I laid it last summer Will report back monday Re: Not enough water from MP rotators 7Jan 22, 2011 12:18 am MP's are one of the most effective and efficient types of above ground irrigation. If in your system they haven't filled the 10mm then have them on for longer. This is why I suggest the using the lids to give you an idea how long your system takes to deliver the 10mm of water It is when the concept of what these are is misused or misunderstood that the problems start. For example many will run them for 10mins and not know they are a slow precipitation rate sprinkler. Effective watering is about slow applications of water. Unlike assaulting a garden with junk popups that only have a low efficiency% which create enormous run off and misting to the air. Give the filters a rinse. There are also many types of MP's that throw different distances. You can adjust them. Try 60mins and see how you go for filling the lids A bit of extra hand watering might be needed to get the lawn back in a hurry. Use bentonite clay every year on established lawns, or once when doing the soil prep before laying turf. This will permanently change the soils ability to hold water. Clay cat litter is the cheapest and easiest way to get it Re: Not enough water from MP rotators 9Jan 31, 2011 10:45 pm What you spent on outlay will have paid for itself already in water bills and so called "lawn care" things As per title, unsure if my land doesn’t have enough fill.
