Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 07, 2013 3:54 pm Hi there, I am contemplating planting a row of mop top robinias along the fenceline down the side of my house (street facing). The position will be above a retaining wall, between the fence and street footpath. (inside the fence is my courtyard). The reason I'm looking at this plant is because I need something that will provide some screening/privacy up top (around 1.8/2m) whilst at the same time having light to no foliage lower down, so that I can maintain access to the merbau fence (for oiling). I was also contemplating planting some low native shrubs under the robinias. Do you guys know if robinias really do sucker badly? Likelihood of suckering in this position? Thanks in advance Re: Mop top robinia - do they really sucker? 2May 09, 2013 5:19 pm Google pleaching, you can create the effect you are after with most trees and control it how you want. Yes robinia will sucker, you can either deal with it and cut off the suckers as needed or pleach another variety like a lagerstroemia (new cultivars ie "indian summer") or pyrus. Also you could just put a trellis up top (wire or lattice etc) and grow a climber up there. You would only have the odd stem in front of your merbau fence and you can then plant a lower story of shrubs. Re: Mop top robinia - do they really sucker? 5May 13, 2013 8:47 pm All robinias are notorious for suckering, and there really isn't anyway to stop it except constantly removing the suckers. Re: Mop top robinia - do they really sucker? 6May 20, 2013 11:21 pm It is absolute insanity to plant these and IMO down right irresponsible. It puts a great deal of stress and aguish on other people who wish not to be a part of the lanscape concept of a home 4 doors down the road. They won't sucker in just your garden. It will be the gardens of every one surrounding you. In many states local Ag Depts will have advices on problem trees. Local councils also. Trees cause more disputes between neighbours than just about anything else. Of the trees at the root, Robinias would be in the top 5 or 10 problem trees. I deal with this issue at least on a monthly basis. The only way to stop the suckers is to not plant them. do not pay until you are satisfied with workmanship windows require flashing over the head archithrave and up under weatherboards 3 28277 Ask the council if there is a chance of getting build over easement exemption. Sometimes easements are unused and 24cm is not all that much. Good luck. And yes any builder… 2 13769 |
