The rest of the garden just keeps looking better and better without using up my time and money. good soil prep pays for itself. Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 462Jul 31, 2012 1:10 pm [quote="Rudolf1980"]Well long time no post. Thought Id share my latest project. To my hubbys discust, I love Bromeliads. I think they are sructually beautiful and come in all diff colour combos. My hubby is more into fruit trees and chillies. Esp his chillies.lol Well I finally got to make my Brom wall. DH bought 2 pallets home frome work for me. I stapled gutter guard at the bottom of each garden bed row to hold the soil. Painted them up, bolted it to the wall and planted it out with my fav Broms. Still have another pallet to put up. Might plant it out with small ferns etc. Hubby wants a couple to plant out with herbs. http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb303/Rudolf24/7437e9cc.jpg View from walking down sideway http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb303/Rudolf24/02a99082.jpg My beautiful Broms. Sadley I only have a couple with their lables still as I had them in a green house that blew over in a storm which of course de potted all my broms /quote] What a great idea Rudolf - you have just given me an idea for my ugly garage wall from next door, I have rendered it and was looking for some outside artwork to put on there, but always wanted something "green" but the whole area on the ground is concreted, so I think I will do the same as you, brom are a favourite of mine and I wont have to water them very much. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I am super excited as we planted this tree 2 years ago and it's never had flowers - I was so disappointed last spring when all we got were new leaf buds. This year it has lots of flower buds about to open I love all the spring blossoms out at the moment (a little early) but can't wait for some fruit The strawberries seem to be thriving on neglect too... Only 5 more days till its officially here. Today in Melb is a great example. Freazing cold morning, beautiful day. This was my fav time of the year up bush on our dairy farm that we used to work on. Everything comes to life. Trees, flowers, animals and my fav, aall our calves were being born. But down here we get frosts. That bit I cant wait to end. My Brom wall is covered by shade cloth. Sniff sniff. Also cant wait for it to start drying up. That way we can actually get a digger into our backyard to start escavations for footings for our verander(pavillion) and our backyard. Im resorting to going to my mums house to get my gardening fix.lol. Mind you my mum doesnt mind one bit.lol Forrester 43sq We have our keys (3/6/11) Now it's time to decorate (that's the fun part.lol) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=37598 Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 467Aug 27, 2012 11:10 am Yay ... can't wait for spring so we can start planting ... blossoms are gorgeous aren't they? (it was near the water meter and water lines so had to be carefully, hence by hand) today its chip off a few dags of cement off the edge of the foundation with a big concrete bolster and small sledgey so i can get the downpipes straight down into the ground about 300 deep. if i can get that done ill ring the hire mob and organize the dingo with trench attachment for saturday pickup. im no where near planting anything yet! Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 471Oct 19, 2012 11:13 am After some long days preparing the soil a la Fu Manchu, I laid 180m2 of Nara Turf in about 2 hours (with the help of some very good mates), came up an absolute treat!! Bought a few more plants. Waiting for a good time to harangue the teens into digging and planting for me and mum has taken pity on me and will come and prune all the roses for me so I can wet the soil underneath and mulch the ground. Sugar cane mulch for my roses so I can just drop handfuls no digging or weeding for me yet. Honestly the sugar cane much just fell into my trolley I didn't pull it there and I did get someone to lift it into the car boot and well ok I did pull up 5 weeds 3 days go but not something I can repeat often. I have 1 more roo paw waiting to go in, 4 tubestock grevillias, a larger grevillia 2-3m and a plant with pretty purple flowers that should grow to around 3 m. I'll get motivated later and add proper names to this list. I have decided to start saving for some raised veggie beds which will have wicked beds and be located in the back yard near a tap instead of having the veggie garden out in the front garden. Could be a while. Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 480Feb 08, 2013 8:39 am Using straw as a mulch in summer isn't as great an idea as amny think. Use straw with some pinebark or tree loppers mulch on top and all is fine. In winter evap rates are low and rainfall is healthy. Using the straws will be very efficient then. And for those who will say, "There's plenty of moisture under my straw mulch" That is because the straw will be wicking moisture from deeper in the soil and bringing it closer to the surface. As air flows across the straw, moisture is drawn up through it and released to the air. Trucking a bail of straw 5000km to WA so it can be driven to a shop, then driven to a house so it can go on a garden is a bit crazy when we look at it like that. That expense is in the price. DSATCO do some excellent straws harvested locally in WA. It's just something many people and horticultural professionals are not aware of. Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
