Mixed seed collection of Paper Daisy yellows, pink, violets and yam daisy into a bucket of sand. Spread around the nature strip to see what happens. The rest are in seed trays with a whole bunch more stuff. Removed last Autumns "strike force" mix of Wax flower, Dianthus and Verticordia, potted up for the summer and ready to grow out for planting in 6 months. The early batch with better "not rushed" cuttings are already flowering. (yum). I can't believe I got wax flower and verticordia to strike. Its not always great over winter though. I lost 60%... RE: Dianthus = Christmas presents for all. All 40 of them.. (2 hours in my yard with a razor and trays is better than that hell they call Westfield) What are these Gone Ducky? (Well... my husband did all the digging and most of the planting, I did the watering ) Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 343Sep 19, 2011 11:38 pm yesterday in the afternoon I went and transplanted out my carnations and also dabbled around some petunias. picked out weeds and watered around seasol and powerfeed need to really mow the backyard thats next on my list Harrisdale backyard finally done! Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 344Sep 20, 2011 1:19 am They are everlastings (Rhodanthe sp.). My second year and the best display! Last year the mulch rotted nearly all of them. I also used the last of the native plant fertiliser I had this year as someone at work mentioned you get more stems... Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 345Sep 20, 2011 1:19 am Oh but it was the first time I had used fertiliser in the garden! Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 346Sep 20, 2011 12:23 pm If you use liquid humates you get way more than if using traditional fert. Its got me stuffed how Kings Park haven't woken up to this yet. They waste so much money on liquid fert on the Rhodanthes when something like Seasol and Powerfeed will well and truly out do it. A solid form would be to use Seamungus on them if chucking something round is easier. A slow acting option that will give you the best display you could wish for. Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 347Sep 20, 2011 6:49 pm Well my partner was being a great help yesterday and watered my 3 week laid EZ turf. Came home from work today and realised the head on the hose had popped off and had watered the lawn all day and nite. Ontop of that all the crap had floated into the pool next to it... Well done.... (How hard is it too turn the tap off at the wall) So today was spent thinking about the wasted water and money. Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 349Sep 21, 2011 7:15 pm Wow isn't Spring just the greatest. What I thought had died is actually flowering! Wow. Pulled some weeds out today and will be my task over the next few days to tidy the front. Admired my flowering plants and also the new green foliage on my liquid amber, red ash and maples! Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 350Sep 22, 2011 10:00 am Great looking plants Gone Ducky - thanks for sharing (& inspiring the rest of us!!) Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 351Sep 22, 2011 7:31 pm Seeded some heirloom tomatoes, chilli peppers and several different herbs. Plus more sunflowers for my girls, in pots this time to give them a better chance against the snails until they're bigger! Admired all my baby carrot, tomato, spring onion and excessive amounts of rocket, whilst bemoaning that only one sweetcorn seedling has popped up yet. Hoping it the rest will stick their heads up now that the weather is consistently warmer, but not counting on it so will plant more soon. Enjoyed eating peas, because my youngest picked the entire plant in an attempt at getting one single pod off. Laughed when my eldest asked why the bean seedlings were wearing 'hats'. Tried in vain to work out what were cucumber and eggplant seedlings and what was weeds - gave up and wished I could pick some of the rhubarb instead, but it's only it's first year. Marked out new veg & fruit beds, poisoned the kik there, then started edging it. Spent today with a mattock digging up another part of the lawn that needs to be evened out a bit to get rid of some of the holes. Hoping to replant this with some nice grass mix that includes clover, but having problems getting one that doesn't feature kik or couch!! Hmmm.... oooohhhh.... in a similar vain to Redman, I brushed all the seeds stuck on my hands (too hard to put back in the packets) into a sandy loam mix, along with Alyssum, Ammobium, Brachycomes, Craspedia, Helichrysums, Rodanthe and whatever else then wandered around the nature strip and front yard sprinkling it. That night was warm and wet and it's been fairly warm the past few days, so I'm hoping to see some really random planting collections pop up soon! Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 352Sep 23, 2011 4:14 am Nature strip still hasn't emerged, seed trays have. You could almost measure the growth of the paper daisy every hour. Brachycomes are up. Waiting for the pea flowers (fabacea sp.) and Paper barks. Paper daisy seeds are fluffy little things. I bet they like socks.. Dug out buried compost for beans and tommies in containers. Mixed in sand and cheap potting mix. Moved a further 3 cubic meters of soil and compost into a raised compost tank which will also hold a mountain of Cucumber. Seeded Snow peas, they probably won't get near the door, I think I have an issue with 'grazing' these strait from the vine. It's kinda like peanuts or chips... Must. Stop. Eating.... 2 weeks - baby tommies in ranbows, strawberries on the wall. Lettuce by the windows and food for all Planting out heirlooms from Diggers this year. Yum... Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 353Sep 23, 2011 12:30 pm The fluffy seeds are quite cute. No sock issues though!! Sand definitely helped when sprinkling them My heirlooms are all from diggers too. My hubby is particularly keen to see the results of the hellfire chilli mix! Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 355Sep 28, 2011 4:41 pm Well it wasn't me ... but we had lawn delivered at 630am this morning for the verge and apparently it's now been laid!! Can't wait to see it - now we just have to get a pipe under the driveway and we can get the front garden done too ... why didn't anyone tell us before we paved the driveway The developer is organising the verge and front garden and we've chosen all natives - hopefully water wise and bird attracting. Will post pics when I take some. For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 359Sep 30, 2011 2:51 pm Transferred all the water we'd collected from rain falling into various kids' buckets, see-saws, trailers and wheelbarrows that were dotted around the garden, into a big bucket ready to use. Like Redman, we haven't yet got a rain tank yet. First one we get will be a little 200l job for the girls' (currently not so) secret-jungle-camp-tree-house, to allow them to have as much water for play and watering their own garden as they like. At the moment, all I can think of when they ask for the hose to be turned on for their use is how much water AND money is being wasted! Took some cuttings from the Victorian Mint Bushes, the Wahlenbergia Stricta (Austral Bluebell I think it's called) and some other random garden plants. The other plants are mainly just experiments to see what will grow from long cuttings taken and then randomly deep planted in the garden. So far, we've managed to grow Goodia Lotifolia this way. Nothing on the random nature strip sprinklings yet Redman, but I'm hoping that this wet week and then the expected dry, warmer weather to come will kick start all those seeds germinating. Would love to see if any of the random tomato, chilli and herb seeds included amongst the Aussie wildflowers will grow. Re: So what have you done in your garden today? 360Oct 03, 2011 12:55 pm I am loving the awesome flowers on my Pinkabelle apple - I only planted it about a month and a half ago and it is covered in blossoms. I counted over 60 flowers currently open and another dozen or so buds yet to open. The Granny next to it (purchased and planted at the same time) is barely shooting new leaves and no flowers. I know the Pinkabelle is partially self-fertile so it will be interesting to see if we get any fruit off it this year (not sure of it's age but it is about 1.5m tall). I think it's quite funny that what is essentially a stick is just a mass of flowers! There was one solitary bee buzzing around there this morning having a field day. I also tied up the Granny with some stocking to the fence in an attempt to somewhat espaliade (?) it to cover the back fence. I want to get some galvanised large mesh (like 10cm squares) to attach the the fence that I can then tie the apple to but the stocking attached to the fence rail will do for the mean time. I also planted out some seed trays with pumpkin, zucchini, carrots, lettuce and a mixture of herbs. I planted all of these as seeds straight into the beds last year/earlier this year but none were successful (i.e. all were eaten) so I'm hoping getting a head start in the seed raising mix will help them get established. Oh, and I spent some time plucking marshmallow weed and stinging nettle out of our lawn (damn you stinging nettle!). Second Time 'Round Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
