Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 04, 2011 6:08 pm As per advice on the forum to proceed (cheers people), recently put down 60m2 of EZ just before Chrissie, it is doing a treat (even in this Perth heat). However, my lovely EZ came infested both with another broadleaf turf (maybe a buffalo species?) and with three of four clumps of kike runners (this really ** me off). The clumps of broadleaf only covered a comparatively small area (probably 1 - 2 m2) and were dotted around the entire 60m2 of EZ. Picked out the kike by hand as soon as it was laid, but waited a while to remove the broadleaf (by hand) as the distinction between it and the EZ was clearer when the blades grew a bit. Spent an hour or so on my hands and knees getting it out (but won't have got it all, so I am assuming repeat efforts will be necessary). Am all set to ring the supplier and give them a bake (will with-hold name for now), but I thought I'd check with the forum first before I unleashed. Is this sort of practice typical of the turf industry (ie is it common for the turf you get to not be 100% the turf specified)? My view was that If I paid for 60m of EZ, thats what I should get. Whats the point of even getting it if it will get taken over by a buffallo/kike that hitches a ride with it??? Anyone else encountered similar? Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 2Jan 05, 2011 2:07 am Absolutely not You would be very well advised to be proactive on this rather than reactive The turf farm I think you may have got the EZ from prides itself on having the highest quality turf in WA (the owner is sometimes outspoken on this issue) so they will be very interested to see for themselves what you have there. It would not be a deliberate move to have buffalo in there and whilst we are a consumer driven culture, you have a living thing there and that isn't like a box on a shelf with absolute guarantees. I think a blend of many varieties is an excellent thing but it isn't what turfs farms want nor the customers for the most part so be polite and calm. Keep in mind that you can have the same turf that can look different. I was just looking at a pic the other night of a buffalo and it had many different sized leaves, however it sure was all buffalo. I guess put yourself in their shoes and they will try to put themselves in yours. With that a good result should come of it. If you get on the phone firing up, no good will come of it all. See how you get on. PM me if you don't get anywhere but they should come out and take a look for you, not the end of the world at all Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 3Jan 05, 2011 11:14 am Thanks Fu, I will have a friendly chat. I noticed from the effort they have gone to in regard to customer feedback (provided feedback form with return envelope), they probably will have a positive attitude in any discussions. Aside from that, first mow last night, my goodness it looks good! Has absolutely thrived. Followed your advice to the letter from mega thread, thanks a heap! Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 4Jan 05, 2011 11:43 am I have to offer thanks for taking the timer to read it It should come in volumes I think I may have even put an intermission in there somewhere with a youtube link to the Girl From Ipanema After the mow it will be a tougher thing to positively identify the suspected turf but in a week or two it will be easy. If it happens that some rolls are contaminated, its easy to get some replacements in there and its all sorted Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 5Jan 05, 2011 1:52 pm I think I have a similar problem with EZ that I layed about 6 weeks ago. One of the rolls seems to have been overtaken by some sort of clumpy grass/weed and these weeds have also spread to other areas. Is it ok to just leave these and let the EZ take over over time, or should I be manually removing them or using another method. If I manually remove them where they have taken over the roll there will be a pretty big bear patch, will this grow over in time? Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 6Jan 07, 2011 10:55 am 2 weeks after install I am seeing something similar with EZ. Used Fu Manchu's soil prep methods and am happy with how well it's survived even through a couple of 40 degree days since laying.
Total area is 100m^2 so around 200 rolls. About 15 rolls in around 200 or so were contaminated. Of these 15 rolls: 13 have Common Weeds 3 have Kikuyu 2 have "Lovegrass" I'll post back once I hear back from Lovegroves about suggested treatment methods. This are pics after 2 weeks (not yet mowed) A long shot: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Reference photo of good grass: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Weeds (apparently crabgrass): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Lovegrass? Anyone got a positive ID on this? Didn't have any of the 'lovegrass' tho. I'll have my discussion with them, and we can compare notes after. Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 8Jan 07, 2011 11:49 am Yep, what I have looks like the common weeds in that pic, turf was also from lovegrove. The roll or 2 that was contaminated has now been completely overtaken. I'll be interested in what they suggest. Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 10Jan 07, 2011 12:49 pm I've got soft leaf buffalo in another part of the garden (next project is to remove that) and the "weeds" photo isn't the same... could be another form of buffalo though. Comments from another garden was "common weeds" but I'm worried about it taking over as you've said. Lovegroves aren't answering the phone at all today despite them saying they reopen on Mon 4 Jan: http://www.lovegroveturf.com/roll-on-tu ... -hours.htm Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 11Jan 07, 2011 10:55 pm i got my EZ from them and seems to be fine.. coupe of small dry patches but thats due to our sprinklers being crap cant wait for winter to give it a really decent soaking.. Harrisdale backyard finally done! Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 12Jan 10, 2011 10:39 am Just spoke with Lovegroves and they say whilst it's rare occasionally it does happen. They have offered to provide me (at no cost) with a broad weed (clover & bindi) weedkiller made by Yates but I can't broad spray across the grass because the grass is too young, so does need to be individually painted onto the weed leaves. Will pick it up later this week and let you know how I get on. Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 14Jan 13, 2011 12:18 pm The top dog from Lovegroves kindly came out to have a look, the rogue weed is . . . . . crabgrass(shown in 'Weeds' photo of RichardDale's post). They are going to treat for it next week. Any one had experience treating this stuff before? Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 15Jan 19, 2011 1:36 pm I dropped in with a sample of Crabgrass last Friday and they're researching a chemical suitable for use with a new lawn that can treat the crabgrass. Unfortunately for us, Sam @ LoveGroves has had to take compassionate leave and probably won't be back until Fri or Mon. Any further details of Crabgrass treatment would be helpful.... I have a 4 week old lawn that's starting to get overrrun.... and don't want to mow because that'll hide the issue. Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 16Jan 20, 2011 1:49 pm RD I had to mow (2nd time since laid 18th December), it was getting too long. I took more crabgrass out by hand before the mow and replaced a roll (with offcuts I had spare) on the most infected part, but there are still some left. I was aware that Sam wasnt in, and figured they won't be spraying till next week anyway, based on your info I think that guess was on the money. Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 17Jan 21, 2011 2:27 pm I would definately get it treated, ours is starting to get overrun quite badly in places. Unfortunately i dont have any left over offcuts anymore so i cant pull the weeds out and cover it over, and because EZ grows so slowly im guessing it will take ages to grow over Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 18Jan 21, 2011 11:21 pm You guys have nothing to worry about there. Get the stuff called "Amgrow Winter Grass Killer" The Endothal in that will nail what you see. For how to use it correctly and effectively suss out some of my posts on sparying for weeds or search "Endothal" It can be pretty common to get weeds pop up in new turf. With stirred up soil and imbalances of soil health it is easy to have happen. In time things improve and balance out Not just EZ that will get this. Not always does it come from a turf farm. Don't worry about patching it up if pulling weeds out. Just bung in some compost and the good stuff will grow through in no time Get molasses down to boost the microbes in the soil. Avoid traditional fertilisers and stick with molasses, seamungus green, shades of green. Use Bentonite clay (I use sodium bentonite from the farm shop) Many EZ turfs are laid without my soil prep advice and methods even by professionals. Bentonite, zeolite and organic means of turf care has meant this stuff becomes bullet proof over winters contrary to what many turf managers will say. Over the last 5-8 years it has proven it self over and over. Even had 3 rolls on the front path for 3 months with no signs of stress. Only limited winter rains and dews for survival. You guys have made an excellent choice and don't get too disheartened there. And remember, you have a living thing there, not a manufactured packaged product. It is natural for nature to throw a few wobbly ones at you every now and then. We can't control nature. Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 19Jan 22, 2011 12:36 pm Thanks for your help Fu Manchu. Do you have any thoughts on how long from laying the turf with your methods we could use the "Amgrow Winter Grass Killer"/Endothal? Re: Tainted EZ turf rolls - should I give supplier a serve? 20Jan 28, 2011 6:49 pm An update: The owner of Lovegroves came out today and said it's definitely crabgrass quite possibly as a result of unsupervised backpackers doing weeding (they can't get any local people to do it). They'll be in next week weather permitting to spray something to sort it out. He has advised that we'll cut off the watering at the same time to really stress out the interlopers! In the meantime it'll get its first mow tomorrow. Cheers, Richard. They using concrete or timber sleepers? Timber or steel uprights? Any drainage behind sleeper? 3 6160 i imagine you also have another contract with an architect? and yeah, whatever other's said about special conditions and appendices 16 16270 hey there! 😊 so, it’s kinda common for standard drawer depths to be around 500mm since most cabinets use this size to fit the usual runners… 3 21173 |
