Hi, just got a bag of suger cane mulch from ANL, planning to lay it on the garden.
What sort of prep do I need before laying the mulch? maintenance and watering?
Cheers

Add additional mulch every 6 mths or so to replinish the old mulch as it breaks down so you always have a good thick layer. The mulch layer over time will add humus and nutrients to your soil encouraging worms to populate and airate your soil. The mulch will also help supress weed growth and reduce watering by minimising evaporation. Best if your mulch is weed seed free and organically grown so it does't contain unknown pesticides. Give the bed a good soaking then lay mulch then water in the mulch to get it to bind together so it doesn't blow around everywhere. laying sugaer cane mulch... 4Dec 29, 2010 4:58 pm Spot on I chuck down a heavy application of Seamungus as well. Perhaps it's just me and I'm sensitive to it. However recently working in aged care I met a landscaper with crap lungs, he never smoked, no passive smoke either and attributes his copd to the crap he has breathed in over the years, mulch included. He wasn't particularly old and didn't use pesticides and herbicides laying sugar cane mulch... 9Jan 01, 2011 10:38 pm No need to. They do no harm and will be just one of many things that start breaking down the mulch into new soil. You're starting out and there's often wild fluctuations of insects in new garden beds. All things balance out. Kill them and you kill off everything else wonderful about what you are creating. I might add that the small flys have arrived to a favorable habitat. They weren't in the mulch and won't be eating plants and destroying the world. Hard to tell from the picture but they do look like hover flys which are great It's only temporary. laying sugar cane mulch... 10Jan 01, 2011 10:39 pm They maybe attracted to the cooler temps of the foliage and moisture staying in the soil and plants.
