Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 30, 2010 11:00 am Hi, We have recently done our boundary fences and gates in treated pine pailings. I was wondering if anyone has stained treated pine pailings? Can it be done? Does anyone have any photo's? We were thinking of staining ours merbau colour Re: Staining a treated pine pailing fence 2Nov 30, 2010 2:13 pm I've stained treated pine steps in Wattyl water-based deck stain (merbau color) and it worked fine, looks like real merbau, so I think it would work OK on your fence. Might cost a bit to buy enough stain for your whole fence though. Re: Staining a treated pine pailing fence 3Nov 30, 2010 3:56 pm The rough finish of the palings would soak up more than say a decking board because they have a greater surface area, plus the fact a boundary fence is a huge area, so it will cost a LOT.... but I don't see why you couldn't. Maybe look into finishes that don't soak in as much (like acrylics). Second Time 'Round Re: Staining a treated pine pailing fence 4Nov 30, 2010 4:48 pm Hi We have just fenced out boundary in pickets as well and are painting them. Tried a spray gun but found it to hard to get the paint on the sides of the pickets and got more paint on the grass (weeds) than on the pickets. If it makes you feel better about the idea of painting we have close to 3000 pickets to paint ! remember 2 coats. We are using solar guard as it has a 10 year gaurentee on 2 coats and 15 years on 3 coats. Found it great to paint with. We have done the posts in the colour of the roof of the house and the pickets in the colour of the walls and it is looking great. With a paint brush it soaked up so much stain that it would have cost a bucket load to do. Just a warning though - cover any plants your are going to spray next to. I lost one silver sheen and could have lost 8 - lucky they picked up Built The Huntley 290 with HomeXcellance / Cheviot Homes Re: Staining a treated pine pailing fence 9Dec 05, 2010 12:37 pm Old fellow I lived next to some years ago said to hose the fence down before painting - wait till it has dried a bit not not fully, then hit it with the paint. We did this one one side & didnt wet down the other side & we did use less on the wetted side & there was no visible color difference when we were done.
