Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 21, 2010 12:14 pm I was hoping someone could give me some advice.....I planted two beautiful farely established Japanese Maples at least a good 6mths ago or more. About 3-4m away from each other. One gets shade sooner at least a couple of hours more.
1st prob-the maple in question looked like it had some trunk damage from word go but still looked healthy, had leaves, new buds etc however didn't spread leaves as quickly as the other. 2nd prob- the good tree has nice green/red foliage, the other in question has none-the leaves it did/does have, have wilted making me think there is a problem! A big one! I suspected it may be Verticillum Wilt (not that I know anything about gardening) and so have used the sachet and watered in well about 2wks ago maybe a bit less. I also cut some bottom branches but didn't hack the tree to bits. New buds look like they are starting to form but not sure how long this willl last for. It does not look like Verticillum wilt (as the stems do not have the layered brown look). Questions: What may be causing my tree to look dead even though the trunk, stems etc are green underneath? Is my tree being water-logged? Maybe drainage is poor? Should I wait a bit longer and see if my maple is going to improve? Should I rip it out and pot it and remove all soil in that area so it doesn't effect my other maple or anything else? I recently brought a replacement maple for that area so wanting to either plant it there or plant it somewhere else and potentially have 3, or maybe even pot it? Any help much appreciated. Re: Japanese Maple and Verticillum wilt? 2Nov 21, 2010 10:48 pm Mate it's going to be pretty hard to nut out from that. When you got them were they potted or transplanted? Re: Japanese Maple and Verticillum wilt? 3Nov 22, 2010 9:25 am They were potted Fu. I looked at the branches and well the "buds" they aren't healthy looking. You rub them and they flake away. 4 were brought altogether at the same time,2 to my property and 2 to family. Theirs are doing great. Get rid of it? Re: Japanese Maple and Verticillum wilt? 4Nov 22, 2010 8:07 pm No hang in there and give them a chance to settle in. The should sort them selves. Just look after the soil they are growing in. Thick layer of straw, good compost under the straw. Seasol, molasses, Powerfeed Molasses once a month, seasol every couple of weeks I'd also see about a solid dose of Olsens Greenbio or Bactivate around them too. Go easy on the water, just keep the soil moist. Re: Japanese Maple and Verticillum wilt? 5Nov 22, 2010 8:11 pm Oh and spread some dolomite of lime around them too. Re: Japanese Maple and Verticillum wilt? 6Nov 23, 2010 10:47 am I have lucerne, around the bottom away from trunk as well. I give it Seasol-power feed often at least every 2 wks. I'll get some of that lime stuff too. Thanks. What should I do with the extra one I brought. It's gorgeous looking. Re: Japanese Maple and Verticillum wilt.....The Verdict! 7Dec 04, 2010 2:08 pm The Verdict of the maple....it's dead. Cause: poor drainage and so I suppose it drowned. Removed 03.12.2010. Lesson learned. Ensure adequate drainage for all plants. I can't just move Fu. I have just invested my life into this house..... For a group planting of 3 maples in triangular formation, what should the spacing be? We want it to look like a small wooded area. NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! Someone on here will be able to answer for you. We have 2 next to each other probably at least a good 4m apart. .....to add to the thread-I don't think my maple ever had V wilt but instead I think it was water-logged hence my fault. Re: Japanese Maple and Verticillum wilt.....The Verdict! 16May 23, 2011 10:09 pm Chuck em in a few metres apart. Do have a think about using other species though. Water water water.
