Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 09, 2010 4:17 pm Hi all, I am going to install a sprinkler system for the lawn (yet to be layed), area is about 7m x 15m. I think I may need about 6 of these sprinklers Hunter MPR40 Sprinkler Body 100mm with 275kPaPressure Reg & Check valve MP2000 Rotator 6.4M radius 90 - 210 deg Head Only What kind of pipe do I need? Would 13mm pipe okay? Or should I get the 19mm ones? If I am going to connect the sprinkler system to the Garden tap, do I need to put in some kind of backflow vale? Would someone please point me to the right direction? Thanks in advance Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 2Nov 09, 2010 11:39 pm before you do anything work out the flow rate from the garden tap. running retic from a garden tap is really not recommended but many do it regardless. It may very well be that you will need two stations from a tap. Water pressure and flow rate is what is needed first. Fill a 9ltr bucket and time how long it takes to fill. A water pressure gauge can be bought from a retic shop pretty cheap. I'd be using the white PVC pipe but 19mm poly will do just fine. As for a timer from a tap, Galcon, always Galcon Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 3Nov 09, 2010 11:41 pm Oh and yes a check valve can be bought from a hardware for around $30-$50. The dual check type and should be about 15-20cm long. Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 5Nov 10, 2010 11:49 am Yeah I'd hate to see you rig this up and only have a dribble of water coming out Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 6Nov 21, 2010 9:46 pm I'm also looking at the Hunter MP series for watering the lawn - I haven't worked out the flow rate yet, but the pump used in my rainwater tank apparently has a maximum output of 100 lpm and it's within 2 metres of the external tap (so I'm assuming the output should be relatively high). The MP data sheets list a series of LPM figures based on radius of the sprinkler head. Is it a simple case of working out which sprinkler heads I need, the radius of those sprinkler heads and subsequently adding up the LPM figures to ensure it's below the output of my external tap? Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 8Nov 23, 2010 9:52 am Hi Fu, I have tried putting in the water pressure guage (max 60psi) and when I turn on the garden tap, it seems to go above 60psi. Is that normal? Should I get another pressure guage with max 150psi? Thanks Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 9Nov 29, 2010 7:05 am Finally managed to borrow a water pressure guage from a plumber, the reading is around 44psi (300kPa), is that too low for popup lawn sprinkers? The time to fill 9L from the garden tap is about 20 seconds. Thanks Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 10Dec 08, 2010 8:12 am 44psi is within the operating range of the MP Rotators but I guess it depends on how many you intend to install and to what arc/radius as to whether it will work for you. For those that have previously installed MP rotators - do you actually need the special tool in order to adjust it? I ran out of time last night to finish the job, but it looks like I can simply turn the arc adjustment ring by hand and use a flat bladed screwdriver to adjust the radius of spray. Having said that, I did try the arc adjustment by hand and didn't really notice any change whereas a couple of videos I watched on the web displayed a significant change with only slight movement (and they used the special tool). Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 11Dec 12, 2010 9:44 pm Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 12Dec 12, 2010 9:47 pm That is pretty fine. I'd install a "High Flo Pressure Reducer" which will bring the pressure down to 33PSI. Cost about $15-$20 in a retic shop. Installed on the other day actually, I might have a picture. Re: Sprinkler system for lawn 13Dec 12, 2010 9:52 pm Folks I will add that I see the very big picture stuff associated with water use and while it is easy to think a simple system is about bodging things together, it is all these types of systems combined that are creating one hell of a headache for water efficiency and sustainability. There is some junk out there freely available to buy but stop, think and get it right. Water is the very most precious thing we have in Australia and while it is chucking it down over East, how quick you guys forget 10 years of drought. I do offer professional advice for a reason. The reason is so we have water coming from our taps in years to come. In this particular case the system is sustainable but it is important to automate and regulate the way water is applied because we can save as much as 25% of the water we pay for just through programming alone! the leaves that are now underground go yellow, the tips that poke through photosynthesise and have chlorophyll, same reason they grow rhubarb in the dark. 5 4824 Once you know the basics, the rest is easy.
